Just an expansion on my original worry. The bit where I recited in my mind "The resurrection was the work of the devil" was premeditated not automatic. I didn't believe it but I kept on reciting it to try and make sense of the original thought when it came into my head. Does that mean I blasphemed the Holy Spirit at the point where I was reciting it?
No. It means you are worrying about it. What you are describing is an obsession( the concern of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit) and a compulsion( the reciting to try to make sense of the thought). It is not usual to have these thoughts especially since you were worried about the thoughts.

Blasphemy of Holy Spirit is not something that a child of God through faith in Jesus can do. Jesus was speaking about the Pharisees who said the works He did were of an unclean spirit.

Your spirit has been sealed. Your thoughts are your own, satan cannot hear them, but he can watch and hear what comes out of your mouth,

Learn the promises of what God will do for you, what He has already done, and doing now.

We are safe IN Him. In is a fixed position. Will not change.

My grandmother always said you can’t stop the birds from flying overhead, but you can stop them from building a nest.

Relax. You belong to the household of faith.

I am a Roman Catholic and the other day, I was on my way to work and daydreaming about things when I suddenly thought about Christ's resurrection and a thought came into my head saying "This is the work of the Holy Spirit" which was obviously good. However, a few seconds later, I had the thought of "This is the work of the devil". It was one of those thoughts that randomly came into my head and I in no way believe it, but it made me feel uncomfortable. For the rest of the morning, I tried to rationalize why it came into my head but in the end all I ended up doing was reciting in my head 3 or 4 times the phase "This is the work of the devil" in a vain attempt to understand why it had come into my head in the first place. Whilst I in no way believe that it's the work of the devil, I feel worried that it might nonetheless be considered to be blasphemous against the holy spirit and therefore causing me to commit the unpardonable sin. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Any feedback would be appreciated because I am worried. Thanks
You love Jesus, so not possible.

Why were you reciting this thought blasphemy?

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is what the Jehovah Witnesses and others do in ascribing the gift and the work of the Holy Spirit
to Satan and declaring that speaking in tongues is demonic. And that healings and miracles are also demonic power.
This in effect is a rejection of the gospel of salvation that we can read of in the NT.
Sadly there are some in the BDF who also partake of this blasphemy.

I am a Roman Catholic and the other day,
I was Roman Catholic before I was born anew by the baptism of the Holy Spirit and can pray in tongues.
Read your New Testament; do not just rely on the readings delivered on a Sunday.
Buy yourself a King James Version or if you find archaic English difficult then purchase an English Standard Version (ESV)
and start reading daily for yourself.
It is food for your soul.

If you are worried about it, that indicates you did not do it.
That's a good answer, but, unnecessary. It is not possible for a Christian to commit an unpardonable sin, since the Divine atonement of Christ is greater than all sins. My brother who can be legalistic, put it very well-. all sins are a drop in the ocean of God's mercy. Surrender it all. Let God be the judge, not us as individuals. That elevates people a to judge. Why condemn ourselves, when God does not? Jesus said, "For God so loved the world...," (John 3:16) the people of the world! "God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that through Him the world (people of the world) would be saved..." (John 3:17) ((paraphrase) The Holy Spirit leads people to repentance through experiencing conviction of sin, not condemnation. The spirit of condemnation that many depressed people experience, is a deceiving spirit. Jesus experienced this on the cross for all humanity. Was He condemned? John wrote, "if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our hearts and knows all things." Therefore our hearts or minds do not have the power or authority alone to condemn us. Neither do deceiving spirits. There is no unforgivable sin for those who turn to the Lord, "For all who cry out to the the Lord shall be saved." sons and daughters of God, are called before birth. "All things are possible for God" Jesus said about this. Let Him make the call. God is judge not us. But be willing to obey in humility. Let's not grieve the sacred Blood of Christ of the New Covenant as if this was not enough. "Lay down your burdens" all things are possible with God. Let Him judge all from suicide to murder and tape in all it's forms, from biblical, spiritual, social, and emotional, et Al, sins of war, turn from it all, to the Lord of the Cross.

That was meant to be "murder and rape in all it's forms.". While I have not personally committed worldly murder or rape, the Lord made it clear that things like theogical rape, (attacking someone's religion) or hatred is the same thing, though it is a difficult concept, and the Bible describes hateful divorces as a "garment of violence" and violating personal privacy is a form of social murder, as psychologist's understand so well.

Boy o boy you are in trouble. Best thing and only thing you can do now is denounce Catholicism and spend the rest of your days following the Protestant doctrines. Enjoying the freedom Christ has given you.

This brings something to mind. I live among the Jews, who do not shave or cut their hair for a few weeks after Passover. Earlier this year I overheard one telling another, "Avichai, I am so scared! I forgot it was forbidden to shave and accidentally removed a few hairs from my beard. I hope God isn't angry at me now! What do I do? Am I done?!!??"

God sees past your beard or your thoughts. There's no need to worry, it's your heart He's after, not your fleeting thoughts!

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
Mar 3:22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.
Mar 3:23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
Mar 3:24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
Mar 3:25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
Mar 3:26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.
Mar 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
Mar 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:
Mar 3:30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.

The Scribes had an evil heart and were of the devil, and believed what they said because they spoke from their heart.
They called that which was good and holy, the Holy Spirit and the work He was doing, evil.
The devil was doing the afflicting and the Holy Spirit was doing the healing.
That is the unpardonable sin.
Refusing to receive Jesus as their lord and savior is not the unpardonable sin.
How many people rejected Christ the first time they heard about Him and His work on the cross for us and later came to receive Him.
Jesus said, "take no thought saying..."
The thoughts we hear are not always ours.
The bible says to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

2Co 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

The "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" is mentioned in Mark 3:22-30 and Matthew 12:22-32. This case of blasphemy is a specific one, called "the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" in Matthew 12:31. In Matthew 12:31-32, the Pharisees (who were not Christians), having witnessed irrefutable proof that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit, claimed instead that the Lord was possessed by the demon "Beelzebub" (Matthew 12:24). Notice in Mark 3:30 that Jesus is very specific about what they did to commit "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit." These Pharisees were obviously not believers to commit such a sin. Having a random bad thought come into your head that you in no way believe is not blasphemy against the Holy Spirit or unpardonable. What is unpardonable is the state of continued unbelief. (John 3:18)

Following on from this, I had another attack on Saturday night where the devil (or whomsoever) was trying to force me to think the thought "the Holy Spirit is the devil". I was wrestling all evening with this and it kept coming out , but I wasn't sure whether it was involuntary or not. So then I did the really stupid thing of keep thinking of the thought actively and reciting it in my head (ie the Holy Spirit is the Devil"). I did not say it out loud at all and I in no way believe the thought but I'm now thinking 'am I in trouble by keep on reciting the thought in my head? - The reason I did so was because I thought that might be the best way to quieten it, rather than keep wrestling with it. Any thoughts on all this?

You may want to seek out a professional counselor/therapist and talk it over with them if you are not already currently doing that.

Yes I think you're right. I am in the process of getting in touch with my autism counsellor, and my mum's just died which has casued a lot of stress and I have only really started embracing Catholicism fully in recent times (although I have always been one). My brother recommeneded medication as well so maybe that's an avenue

As a person who deals with OCD and intrusive thoughts, I know the feeling. We all get those thoughts that just kinda randomly pop in there, especially if we're uncertain of something. Seek professional help as was suggested. That is all I will say because I know it can be very easy to latch onto someone saying a hard "yes you did" or "no you didn't." All I will say is you are not alone in your struggles, and God will help both of us in it.
