I am not sure what to pray, a former workmate said his mother died and asked me to pray for her.
I cant pray for his mum as shes already died? . He says she was a christian in the orthodox tradition do I just pray for the family left behind?

Can you all suggest a prayer that he can learn to pray as I dont think he is a believer.

My simple prayer is Lord rest her soul and please comfort all who mourn.

I don't see why you couldn't pray for her. Any prayer you pray would be heard by God even before He created the universe. He will answer any prayer that is aligned with His will and desire. I have said a prayer for his mother.

There is no need to pray for the dead. The dead know nothing and do not benefit from prayers. I'd pray instead for the family left behind.

I think that prayers can be said for anyone - dead or the living; humans, animals, etc. Didn't Jesus say that the dead would rise again? Your prayer sounds OK to me. I don't use special language when praying - I just say what I feel in my heart. God knows what you want to ask before you ask it I think.
I pray your mate feels better soon. Just give him lots of support.
