in real life the Rhett character was one of Margaret Mitchell's beaus known as 'Red' who was a bit of a rebel. But he became drunk and violent so she left him.
the rape scene in the movie was of course sanitised a bit but the book had more detail on why Rhett was so taken up with .scarlett, even while she was oblivious and in love with Ashley.
MM was actually killed by a drunk driver crossing the street in Atlanta.

I cried when Melanie died, she was such a shining example of a true christian in GWTW.
Scarlett was irish catholic.
Mammy was one of my favourite characters. When Scarlett went back to Tara, not only did she get her strength from the red earth, but also comfort in the arms of her mammy, who would often scold her when she was doing things wrong. I can imagine she would receive counsel there and wisdom.
the most hrrobly shocking thing in the movie was when Scarlett fell down the stair and lost her baby. In the book, she had three children to each of her husbands but they were cut out of the film.
if she had turned to God I can imagine she made true her promise and looked after Wade.

And it has to be said, Hattie McDaniel, who played Mammy won best supporting actress Academy Award, and then for years and years afterward, NOBODY who was African American (Or negro as called back in the day) won any best actress award until Halle Berry. And I don't think she was even full African American. Like her parents were white and black.
So anyway if I had to pick or nominate someone with the best stage name or was it her real name? - it would be Butterfly McQueen.

Interestingly they took Scottish surnames. Mc this or that.
Its the thing with rich plantation owners would often be of Scots heritage, and then the slaves had to have a surname and so chose their masters...and that has carried on down the line to today.
In GWTW, Prissy may have been short for Priscilla, but we don't know what Mammy's actual name was. She was just Mammy.

Shoot.... I thought this thread was going to be about folks with chronic flatulence.... 
It's ok. if you hadn't read or seen the movie, and don't know what it's about, I can tell you it's not about rape, or lust or passion, (even though some of that is in it) or glamourising it.
It's about the surviving the American Civil war, from the POV of the Southerners.
Windies is just a name for people who have seen Gone With the Wind a number of times or read the book or both and like to discuss it. If you can sit through a 4 hour movie or read a 1037 book then thats more than what most people can manage.
There are other movies and books you COULD discuss, like Lord of the Rings (also very long, in both book and movie) or the Chronicles of Narnia,,,,but this thread is about Gone with the Wind.
As for being a christian, I believe Vivien Leigh (the actress who played Scarlett O'Hara) was a Catholic, but a very lapsed Catholic. Near the end of her life she regretted a lot of the things she did when younger (and manic!) but she sort of learned through it and was at peace with herself, and others when she died. If you ever read a biography of hers there was. lot of conflict in her life and she battled many demons.
I find the love triangle very sad and actually I wondered what I would do if I was in Scarlett's position. Could she have helped falling in love with Ashley who was kind to her, and seemed to be the perfect gentleman? Was she wrong for having feelings for him? She didn't want Rhett at all when she first met him. She actively pushed him away, and couldn't see that he did love her in his own way.
Anyway...the scene where she's praying and has an epiphany that she ought to tell Ashley that she loves him is quite funny in that once she tells him, its all ruined. He's going to marry Melanie instead and her declaration won't change his mind. Melanie was a Christian in every sense of the word.

I haven't read ALL the sequels, but I have read Scarlett by Alexander Ripley, and the parody/spinoff The Wind Done Gone which told from Mammy's or the slaves point of view
Margeret Mitchell's day job was a journalist for the Atlanta newspaper.
