You can initiate conversations, just not private ones. For more site specific topics, there are threads that cover many topics. For general conversations, there is a little thread called The Chat Threads, under single's threads.
And, if there is anybody you wish to reach and let them know you would like to talk to and get a hold of or talk about them in a posting (and let them know that you are) here is a little trick.
