Not a lot of people know that.........
Florence Nightingale the British Nursing Pioneer had a pet Owl called Athena named after the Goddess of wisdom whom she rescued in Greece. It used to sit on her shoulder and in her pocket. Florence was very fond of her and was terribly upset when she died. She had the bird stuffed.

Famous Victorians appear to have some facination for exotic animals. Dante Rosetti the Pre Raphelite Artist turned his Chelsea home and Garden into a sort of zoo. Among the inhabitants were Wombats and Wallabys. Many of the inhabitants escaped which upset his neighbours. Sadly Rosetti had no idea how to look after these creatures so many had short lives.
