Hello, brothers and sisters. I wanted to get some opinion's on a topic that can be very controversial amongst believers: the role of a woman in evangelism, ministry, preaching, parenting, work, life, etc.

Before I start, PLEASE PLEASE... this is a touchy subject but I am not here to start arguments or fights. People may have different opinions and interpretations and that is okay. I just want feedback on the topic at hand!

I am a 21 year old woman who just recently graduated from college; I used to write for an online magazine called Whole Magazine for women and would write weekly devotionals - I have led Bible studies as well. I have been saved now for about 5 years now and have always had a passion to study and share God's Word in some way shape or form. I admire and look up to people such as Kari Jobe, Sadie Robertson, and other young women who are known to speak in church and "preach" if you want to call it.

I recently stumbled upon a few Scriptures that certainly got my attention. I will list them out and then continue:

1 Timothy 2:11-15 ~ "Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control."

Titus 2:4-5 ~ And so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

1 Corinthians 14:34-35 ~ "As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church."

Ephesians 5:22-23 ~ "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior."

Now, I can't emphasize how important Scripture is to me. I don't want to "cherry pick" and deny a passage even though it sits strangely with me. I accept this for what it is. And I have been praying deeply to the Lord about this subject. I have seen and witnessed so many women be complete warriors for God and they do it beautifully. I know there is a difference between pastoring a church and evangelizing. Proverbs 31 is one of my favorite parts of the Word and I think it tells elegantly of just how important a woman's role is in the eyes of God, but why these verses? I haven't researched the historical context of these at all.

I guess I am here to ask: what is your interpretation of these? Do they truly mean what they say? Does this mean it is wrong for me to lead Bible study, enter into the workforce, speak in a church, etc.? I am just REALLY interested in knowing what it is that people have to say about these Scriptures, how they think they relate to the role women play in ministry and life [in general]. What is a woman's purpose to you?

God bless, everyone! Feel free to leave a brief comment, long comment, or anything that pertains to this issue - you don't need to answer everything, you can just answer certain parts; its up to you!! Sorry for the book of an intro!!

They all seem pretty clear to me.. No need for much investigation..

Woman should not be in Authority over a man..
Woman should not be pastors and the like..

This does not mean woman cannot evangelize or teach girls and boys and be in authority over them.. Indeed a mother must have authority over her children..

Just aqs the holy women of the Old Testament were in positions of leading, so are all women who speak in the Holy Spirit. I am not a fnatic on this but Paul did sayit was his own practice not to allow women to speak...…………...

I find this topic interesting :)

In the Scandinavian /Nordic countries, where I am from, we have had several female political ministers and other leaders that I see are performing just as well as men.

So, what is the practical reason (not the historical about Adam not being deceived) from a Christian perspective, why women can't lead men?

That's the thing, the Christian perspective isnt supposed to be "practical," its supposed to be Biblical. Yes, you have to be logical about things, but I root everything I believe in the Word of God. I truly do go to Scripture for all of my guidance and answers; and if I don't find it right away, I pray about it. I am in no way shape or form denying these passages I have provided, but it is hard to view them confidently when I personally know and witness women who lead beautifully and seem to be ordained by God to do what they do. I have gone to church and seen a woman get up and speak elegantly about Jesus. I have literally gone to a small convention that was just for young women /girls and it took place at my church. @Unitas

Women were the ones preaching...now reading and understanding these passages, does that mean that was sinful? Because to me, it looked like they were being used by God to do fantastic things, yet I turn around and read Scripture telling me women cant speak in church and if they have questions to stay silent and ask a man/their husband. Does this mean a woman asking questions during Bible study isn't okay? Am I not allowed to ask a question as a believer in a church setting? It just intrigues me because as a female..I want to know what it is I should and should not be doing when I step foot into a church and what my role truly is as a young woman.

Note: what I am saying is, when the Holy Spirit is present in a teacher, male or female, I listen.

I am asking out of curiosity, in what context than is it "okay" for a woman to teach? Outside of a church? Without men present? Because in the passage I listed above, it states that woman shouldn't teach over men. I have seen many times men and women fellowship together and women share beautiful insight with males and show them the grace of God. Is this bad? I guess I am trying to identify what the line is that makes it not okay. God bless!

Maybe this is a problem of mine, but I don't want to blindly follow an authority. I follow what makes sense for me.

Therefore I normally try to understand what a rule is based on. This makes it easier for me to remember and follow it.

Maybe Christians don't seek the same understanding as I do. I will watch this thread for a while and see if information is given, that helps me understand the reason from a practical view.

Paul was most likely caught up in various customs of the time. Woman who are guided by the Holy Spirit will teach and speak whenever given to do so. Those who are blessed to be in the Spirit also will hear them. Help is always help, and it is from our Father, not from the vessel.

Isn't it dangerous to base your conclusion on a personal interpretation (most likely) of Paulus situation ?

This is exactly how the Bible claims Eve was deceived. God was not interested in how Eve rationalized it and how the snake made sense. He only cared about obedience. Lesson....not learned?

I think rationalization is a fantastic tool to discern God’s word. When people contemplate something usually they start with a premise, a preconception. Then they mentally advocate for that conclusion. If we believe our thoughts are higher than God’s thoughts we will employ confirmation bias and make secular conclusions that “explain” why scripture is irrational or outdated. If we believe the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom then we will automatically align our preconceptions with what is written and find reasons why it states what it does, even if it’s not what we want it to say.

Yes, we shouldn't try to use our mind to control life.

Has this got anything to do with me asking, what the rule about women not teaching men can be based on from a practical perspective?

Or have you used your mind to misunderstand my intention?

When understanding is given by the Holy Spirit, it is not an opinion nor an interpretation, it is truth. As for what I posted about Paul, have you never read what he sasys, "I do not allow" This is plain language, not an interpretation....

Have you never read of the holy woman in the Old Testament, Meriam, Esther, Deborah and more" Will you say they did not have the permission from men? God certainly gave His.

"Most likely" for me means, it's something I'm not sure of.

If that wasn't what you meant, then it seems like I have misunderstood your message because of differences in our language :)

First of all welcome to Christian Chat. I think it is wonderful that you have a passion for God’s word and desire to share it with others. Whether it is Paul’s opinion or mandated by God, I understand why Paul wrote what he did. As a father of a two daughters, one older and one younger than yourself, a husband for 22 years, as well a brother to sisters and raised by my single mother, I can tell you that female thought patterns are not congruent with male thought patterns. It has nothing to do with intelligence. Fundamentally women do not think like men. Women do not teach like men. Women do not react to problems like men. Socially, parentally and occupationally men and women are just different. Take a look at society for a minute. Most stand up comedians, singers and politicians are men. My post would be exceptionally long and boring if I went into how mirror neurons are responsible for this. God made us different. He created women to nurture and men to lead. That doesn’t mean you can’t find empathetic men and authoritative women. However since people need some doctrine to follow to prevent chaos, this one was implemented. There were many priestesses (non-Christian) in the time of Paul. They successfully led...men astray. Men will do stupid things for women. Look at Adam, and Samson, and David and Solomon. Women who know how to manipulate (most of them) could successfully apostasize a church. I’m sure you would be a fantastic youth leader and woman’s Bible study leader. As far as leading men, I think the words are clear.
