These verses warn us to be careful when we are in the presence of those who are powerful … those who exert influence over others.
These verses remind me of Daniel 1, where Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself (Dan 1:8). Daniel asked that he, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah be allowed to eat pulse (vegetables) and drink water (Dan 1:12) and at the end of ten days they were fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat toe portion of the king’s meat (Dan 1:15). According to Dan 1:17, As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
These verses warn us not to over-work in our efforts to become rich. The focus here is those who work to be rich. There are many verses in Scripture which tell us to work, and warn us not to be slothful, in order to provide for the necessities of life. However, these verses warn against working to heap up temporary riches which may provide some temporary comfort in this life. Worldly riches are fleeting and temporary.
Is the ruler of vs 1 the same as him that hath an evil eye of vs 6? They could be.
The one who has an evil eye says eat and drink, but his heart does not contain the same sentiment.
To eat and drink at the table of the one that hath an evil eye will be such an unpleasant experience that the food which seemed so enjoyable will not settle in the stomach.
