Salvation is by the grace of God through faith in Jesus. When Jesus spoke of the importance of Baptism how are we to dismiss it?
Mark 16 “...Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is
baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
Notice? It isn't saying Salvation saves. It also isn't saying Baptism isn't necessary. They who believe and are Baptized will be saved.
Jesus’ Final Public Words
John 12:44 But Jesus shouted out,[cq] “The one who believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me,[cr] 45 and the one who sees me sees the one who sent me.[cs] 46 I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone[ct] hears my words and does not obey them,[cu] I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.[cv] 48 The one who rejects me and does not accept[cw] my words has a judge;[cx] the word[cy] I have spoken will judge him at the last day. 49 For I have not spoken from my own authority,[cz] but the Father himself who sent me has commanded me[da] what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life.[db] Thus the things I say, I say just as the Father has told me.”[dc]
Sometimes in this type discussion people think because the apostle Paul said he is not sent to baptize but to teach, 1 Corinthians 1:17, that this means Baptism isn't necessary or vital to our salvation. That's not true at all.
If we read chapter 1 in context we see that Paul was speaking of his purpose under Christ, that of teaching, not baptizing. This does not mean Paul did not believe Baptism was part of salvation.
What is salvation?
Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each one of you be baptized[
cb] in the name of Jesus Christ[
cc] for[
cd] the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.[
ce] 39 For the promise[
cf] is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.”
1 Corinthians 1
Acts 9 shows us that Paul was baptized. And he knew it was to cleanse him of his sins. Perhaps one of the most eloquent sermons Paul gave as pertains to sins and Baptism and salvation.
And now what are you waiting for?[bf] Get up,[bg] be baptized, and have your sins washed away,[bh] calling on his name.’[bi]
He also taught Baptism was necessary for the salvation of the sinner.
The Believer’s Freedom from Sin’s Domination
Romans 6 What shall we say then? Are we to remain in sin so that grace may increase? 2 Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life.
Galatians 3
Sons of God Are Heirs of Promise
23 Now before faith[
ax] came we were held in custody under the law, being kept as prisoners[
ay] until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 Thus the law had become our guardian[
az] until Christ, so that we could be declared righteous[
ba] by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.[
bb] 26 For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith.[
bc] 27
For all of you who[bd] were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave[be] nor free, there is neither male nor female[bf]—for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants,[
bg] heirs according to the promise.
And as we have noticed, Jesus repeatedly spoke of the importance of Baptism. Again,
Mark 16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who does not believe will be condemned. 17 These signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages;[j] 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands, and whatever poison they drink will not harm them;[k] they will place their hands on the sick and they will be well.” 19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 They went out and proclaimed everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through the accompanying signs.
