Rejoice always, pray without ceasing. For this is the will of God for you.
Do not extinguis the Holy Spirit. ( end quote ).

what a wonderful exhortation from Paul. These are not just words we pass by as in
a novel. They are words that are to be deeply buried within the soul. The fire of
the Spirit is to rage within us. The power of our Lord Jesus Christ keeps us from all evil
because He is wihin us.

I don't think we can obtain authorial intent by ending with "quench not the Spirit" We must include the following.

19Quench not the Spirit. 20Despise not prophesyings. 21Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

When we read them together the thought is that when there is a prophesy given in the assembly don't try and stop it because you think people are faking it. We don't have to believe it is from the Spirit automatically either. Don't quench it, don't despise it or think, (he's / she's faking) but do Prove it (does it agree with scripture, and is it edifying) hold fast that which is good. Toss off the flakey things but hold on to the legitimate prophesying because the Spirit does want to speak to us and we should not quench or despise such manifestations of the gifts of the Spirit.

If you were responding to my post, it would be more obvious if you replied to my post. I will assume that you were. There is no spirit of contention behind my post. I was contributing to the discussion on the meaning of "Quench not the Spirit"

Does "Quench not the Spirit" mean "Don't stop being on fire for God?" It could mean something like that if that was all that was said. It could mean a number of things if that was really the "end of the quote" by Paul but it wasn't.

The Quench not the Spirit is connected to "despise not Prophesying"

So the authorial intent of "Quench not the Spirit" is most likely related to any attempt to reject or not allow prophesying in the assembly. Maybe there had been some efforts by some in the church at Thessalonica to stop people from prophesying in the assembly.

If that was Paul's intention, to advice them not to quench the Spirit by not allowing people to prophesy then we should make sure that we don't do that in our assemblies.

We really have no authority to make this mean something else completely different than what Paul was telling the Thessalonians just because we don't like the idea of people prophesying in the assemblies. As a matter of fact if we try to take what Paul said here and make it mean something other than stopping people from manifesting the gifts of the Spirit in the assemblies then we are guilty of attempting to Quench the Spirit by attempting to change the meaning of this scripture.

What I mean by that is that if we do not adhere to the admonition as it was intended by Paul and we stop people from prophesying in the assembly because we don't think that the Holy Spirit still does that then we are quenching the Spirit. If we automatically accuse a member of being fake or not having the gift of prophesying before we have proved him or her we are guilty of despising prophesying.

for understanding my original post. It was my earnest suggestion for others to
bring the Holy spirit into their hearts rather than just reading what paul said
once the holy Spirit we should keep it burning within us. The second poster rattled
reams of gibberish that had absolutely nothing to do with my post an shouid have been posted elswhere on its own merits

Are you saying that you think Paul mean that we should Keep the Holy Spirit burning within us? That this is what he meant by Quench not the Spirit? Do you think Despise not prophesying is part of Quench not the Spirit? How does one keep the Holy Spirit Burning. Do some people have the Holy Spirit but He is not Burning? How does one Quench the Spirit? Can you give an example of how one quenches the Spirit? That Paul is talking about?
