As for versions of the Bible, you will know which is best by th Presence you feel while reading.
For me, all seem to be fine, though I do not like the one's whic bend genders. This is just over the top..
Trust your Savior and go with the one that you feel best about. There are errors of manin just about all versions, even the original manuscripst for even they were transcribed over the centuries with an error here and another there in transcribing.

The MEV is supposed to be an updated KJV, but there are some word changes which definitely change the meaning of verses. So once again, stick to the KJV or invest in a KJV 2000 Bible. The NKJV is untrustworthy, just like the NASB.
For example, in 1 Peter 1:1 they have used the word "refugees" instead of strangers or sojourners. That is definitely not the meaning (as noted below) but it makes a huge difference to how we perceive those sojourners.

Original Word: παρεπίδημος, ον
Part of Speech: Adjective
Transliteration: parepidémos
Phonetic Spelling: (par-ep-id'-ay-mos)

Usage: residing in a strange country; subst: a stranger, sojourner.
But here is the definition of "refugee": A refugee, generally speaking, is a displaced person who has been forced to cross national boundaries and who cannot return home safely.

I haven't read the MEV myself but you should research it further if you are interested.
I've used the NIV for years. It's my favourite but I don't feel the need to convince others to use it.
Don't give up in your search for the right bible for you and don't be intimidated by the irrational fears and anger of agitators like Nehemiah 6 who work hard to discourage Christians from Bible study.
