Hi. I really want to understand what is meant by "judgement". We tend to think that judgement, in this case, is the same as condemnation. But it really?

The Judgment is where everyone has to stand before God and account for their attitude to Jesus Christ. If they are found guilty of rejecting Christ, then they are condemned to a Christ-less eternity, separated from God and everything good that He has created.

But those who have turned to and embraced Christ as Saviour, won't be judged in the same way, because they have already judged themselves guilty of sin and have turned to Christ for mercy and grace and so they are saved by God's grace through faith, and not of themselves but have received the gift of God. The Scripture says that because they have judged themselves, they will not be judged.

Condemnation is the consequence of God's judgement. In law, you face the court and the judge either convicts or releases the individual. If the person is found guilty, sentence then follows.

We are all born judged and condemned. What we do have is a tremendous opportunity to repent and accept God's gracious gift of salvation through Christ. Those who believe and receive are made alive in Christ. Those who do not, remain dead in trespass and sin.

Hebrews 9:27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment.................

John 3:
16For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. 18Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

19*And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21But whoever practices the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be seen clearly that what he has done has been accomplished in God.”
*The verdict follows judgement.

Your question presumes that all Christians are safe. There are many people that identify with Christ, but their hearts are far from him. (Matthew 15:8)
You're asking a question that has hard doctrine behind it and most people, even people that believe they are Christians, cannot accept it.

The ultimate judgment is to salvation or to condemnation while common judging is judgment is decisions based on right surmisal. This latter is used where we are taught to "judge for yourselves what is right"
Remember, even when judging for ourselves what is right, we must keep in the forefront of our minds it is only for ourselves.
Do not be restricted by the confines of the little each of us actually knows by condeming others if others are justified in the sight of God.

I thought I would add, Ezekiel Chapter 20 discusses the final judgment. It's a long difficult chapter. I have to read it over and over and over. But, there is judgment doctrine in that chapter.

Take it slow, read over and over and meditate on it. You might see that it discusses a lot of what is being discussed in this thread ... among many other things.

John 3:16-18
King James Version
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

I do ponder this question. What happens to those whose heart is in Christ but don't (or can't) consciously bring that to words? Surely there is such a thing as a Christian in all but name.

It certainly means the condemnation of all people who have heard and then rejected the Message of God and people who have heard and rejected the Atonement of the LORD Jesus Christ..

Yes Everyone who rejects the Gospel of the LORD Jesus Christ will be condemned on the day of Judgement for sure..

Condemnation is the current state of anyone who is without salvation by placing their faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Judgment is what is to come once you 1. die then the judgment 2. Christ returns and then you are judged a receive the final judgment
