I think that the longest fast I've ever been on is 1 day, and that's been so long ago, I don't remember if it was no water or food, or no food and only water. what I do remember is feeling like I was going to die-- nervous, jittery, shaking and almost unable to pick up the fork to eat. And that was only one day!

I don't know if I believe people who claim to have been on 40 day fasts. But I have heard plenty of stories about people who have gone on 3, 7, 14, 21, and 40 day fasts. And I have even heard of someone (prophet Brian Carn), who went on an 80 day fast, without food or water. I know that some people starve without choice. I think about some of the people in the Haiti earthquake who survived, after they were discovered, buried under rubble, more than a month or so later. So, I know that the body can survive up to a certain extent of time without food or water. But to starve yourself at will is another story. There have actually been people who have died on fasts and hunger strikes. I don't consider it a good testimony for Jesus to die in the midst of seeking His face. There are practically proper and improper ways to do it, from what I understand...after listening and reading a little on the subject.

What is your experience, if any, with fasting? I know that it's you're not supposed to really talk about, but only do unto G-d. But I'm asking for the sake of advice. Because I have been contemplating it for a long time, but have'nt been able to muster up the courage to take on. I know that I lack self discipline but it's not something I will overcome in one day. I just want to know the healthiest and most fruitful way to fast, so that if I did decide to do it, I would do it successfully.

fasting is not about NOT Eating. read again what GOD says fasting is:

Isaiah 58:4-6
New King James Version (NKJV)
4 Indeed you fast for strife and debate,
And to strike with the fist of wickedness.
You will not fast as you do this day,
To make your voice heard on high.
5 Is it a fast that I have chosen,
A day for a man to afflict his soul?
Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush,
And to spread out sackcloth and ashes?
Would you call this a fast,
And an acceptable day to the LORD?
6 “ Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the heavy burdens,
To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?

do not fast from abstaining from food but in doing good works.

I used to fast days at a time and not eat but only drink water. You should consider that you need to pray when you fast and only fast as long as it doesn't interfer with your life too much. Sometimes I fa sted too much!

I don't see anywhere in the Bible that says you can fast too much. In fact, I would say through simple logic and a few Bible passages, that a person who fasts more and through inconvenient times is more holy.“Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body (1 Corinthians 6:23)." Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Romans 8:6 "For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace." Plus you don't have to just fast from food. It could be food, or food and drink, or fast food, or meat, or from junk food or soda. Certainly you shouldn't be eating junk food or fast food anyway, but if you're not there in your Christian life to eat healthy you could at least fast from it.

People who say they go on 40 day fasts are usually talking about going without solid food, and they'll drink smoothies and other nutritionally dense drink foods. If you want to go full on for a fast like that, then I recommend going on a program. Just look up 40 day fast on google, you should have no problem.

If you want to be healthy about a fast it depends on how long the fast is and how healthy you were when you start. How long were you thinking of trying?

Either God tells you to fast and how long, OR you can choose a fast. Understand that it WILL interfere, but it is a fast with PURPOSE. We don't fast just to fast, but to get closer to the Lord....to hear His will on a matter and to empty ourselves of 'fleshly' interference.

The Daniel Fast is great for beginners. Some excellent books out there on the subject..read at least one.

From what I am now understanding, the traditional "Daniel fast" that has been taught as a partial fast, is a wrong interpretation. The bible never said anywhere that Daniel went on a partial fast. But from the original language of the text, Daniel's "mourning" was a complete fast. There were no partial fasts in the bible.

I just learned this recently. It's scary how unbiblical some of the things we have been taught for the longest are!

If you fast, wouldn't you spend the whole time thinking about how hungry you were rather than thinking about God? Sorry if this didn't help. It's just....fasting doesn't make sense.

that is because God does not require a fast where you mortify your flesh by not eating (that is the way the carnal mind things of fasting) but a heart were you serve GOD and others by showing them HIS LOVE through good works(that makes fasting into a spiritual growth thing).

However neither type of fasting will get you into Heaven. Only God's grace and mercy through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ does that.

Galatians 2:21

New King James Version (NKJV)

21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”

This is totally the opposite of the truth. If you're hungry for the sake of mourning Christ not being with us yet (which should be your purpose for fasting) than that's all that you can think of every time you get hungry. Matthew 9:15: Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast." That's now.

If you're shivering, and jittery, or itchy from one day without food, then you have stored up toxins in your fat cells. Take it slow. Americans in general have terrible diets, and that's how we're so unhealthy. A Hebrew could go 40 days without food and water back then because the planet didn't have the toxins it does now: examples: heavy metals in the fish like mercury and all the pesticides, herbicides, food additives, preservatives, stabilizers, thickeners, artificial flavors, colors ect... See Moses did it. Deuteronomy 9:18 says: Then, as before, I threw myself down before the Lord for forty days and nights. I ate no bread and drank no water because of the great sin you had committed by doing what the Lord hated, provoking him to anger.

Fasting is good not only for your spirit, but your body also. A lot of people do fasting to help to cleanse their body of toxins and such, one of the most common being juice fasts (and not the kind you buy at the store either.) I would not recommend fasting w/out water for more than 3 days and definately limit the physical activity if you chose to go w/out water.

In this verse, Jesus is speaking about His Spirit. The Holy Spirit of Truth, not the physical body of the Son.
Yes, you are absolutely right. But, you still don't have me convinced. God bless
