The Destruction Of The Temple

I thought it would be interesting to discuss this great event.
How Jesus prophesied it, whether it was prophesied in the OT, and then
the importance of the event.

I think firstly it is good to anchor oneself in the various accounts of Jesus' prophecy.
Matthew 24, Luke 21, and Mark 13.

Jesus Yeshua, the Chief aand Cornerstone rejected by man, and we being the living stones of the Temple also will be scattered.

I think it helps to understand the place of the second temple in the history of Israel.
Obviously Solomon's Temple which was constructed around 970-960BC had been destroyed
around 589BC by Nebuchadnezzar after a 2 year siege. Lamentations desribes the aftermath:

2:7 The Lord hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the Lord, as in the day of a solemn feast.

The Temple was then reconstructed 70 years later around 519BC by the priests under Zerubbabel.
Herod The Great then embarked around 20BC on a massive upgrade of the whole temple mount, which finally
ended long after his death around 64AD.

The 2nd Temple was considerably larger and more impressive than the first Temple I believe.
However there was no Ark of the Covenant in the 2nd Temple, it had been lost around the time of Nebuchadnezzar,
allegedly hidden by the priests somewhere.......

The second Temple, according to the Word, was nowhere near as magnificent as the first. When the older men of Israel saw the second Temple, they wept, for it was not as grandd as the first. They could remember the first.

The spiritual temple is not destroyed, we are the temple. The earthly temple explained the spiritual temple. God was within the ark, God is within us. The law was in the ark in the temple, the law is written on our hearts.

All the old testament is an explanation of the new testament.

The destruction of the temple was highly significant. It meant the end of the natural priesthood, which had become the High Priest's personal wealth generator. It was a warning to Israel against their continuing rejection of the Messiah. It was God's means of ensuring that the Temple would no longer be the centre of worship. The new temple would be living stones; the hearts of believers living in love and unity. Lord Jesus became the great High Priest. All true Christians are priests, a truth restored after the Reformation.

It's a warning to the self satisfied, complacent and spiritually proud. God has no problem with allowing disaster to come in order to bring down the pride of men. Britain is no longer great and the empire virtually non existent. I can see the USA heading in the same direction. As the destruction of the Temple was the precursor to the destruction of Israel as a nation, so I see signs that the USA is ignoring God's warnings. Is China to the USA as Rome was to Israel? We will find out one day. It does not have to happen. I hope and pray that it does not.

The Ark of the Covenant was seen in Heaven. I believe it is mentioned in Revelation, but I could be off there. It was seen in Heaven though, but I am not certain in which Book this is mentioned.

Mat_24:2 (ASV) But he answered and said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

And reading Daniel we find in the very last days the people who know will be few, scattered, yet helping those who do have not come to the knowledge of Jesus Yeshua...

With the Head and the Cornerstone away, the living stones will have been scattered. Jesus Yeshua is coming back to build His Temple.

I'd like to illustrate another view of the Destruction of the Physical Temple. Even though nothing is written towards this viewpoint, I believe it is still true nonetheless. The Gospel of Christ was going to flourish no matter what because that was God's intent and plan. But the removal of the physical Temple opened many doorways to the Gospel of Christ. As long as the Temple existed, it was difficult to accept that God lived within the [Temple] of our own physical being. With the Temple destroyed, it was much easier of a concept to accept that we are the Temple that God exists in. I personally think the Temple destruction ended the one way God dealt with man to further God's new plan, the Gospel of Christ, and the concept of the Holy Spirit living within us [Temple].

Correct. Check Revelation 11. The Ark of the Covenant (Testament) was taken to Heaven before Solomon's temple was destroyed.

As to the destruction of the Temple, Jerusalem, and Judea in 70 AD, it was the result of the rejection of Jesus of Nazareth and judgment upon Israel. The Jews in Palestine were given a million reasons to believe on Christ, but the nation as a whole rejected Him and demanded His crucifixion.

They also cried that His blood should be on their heads and those of their children. Therefore God brought judgment on them through the Romans. It was a great tragedy, and Israel would be exiled from their land for 19 centuries. Europe became anti-Semitic also and persecuted the Jews. Then Hitler tried his "final solution". Today the whole world hates Israel (including the Biden administration). That is not what God wants but it is what Satan wants.

At the same time Christ FULFILLED all the functions of the temple and its sacrifices by His one great sacrifice for sins forever. Thus the feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits, the Day of Atonement, and Pentecost were all fulfilled in 30 AD. On the 14th of Nisan, 30 AD the veil in the temple was supernaturally torn from top to bottom to establish the fact that the Levitical priesthood and the work of the temple was finished. The whole nation of Israel should have been saved on the day of Pentecost, but even then there was opposition to the Gospel and the apostles. But God waited for 40 years (a period of probation) before He had the temple destroyed.
