I think Paul might have said that while nothing one puts in their body makes it unclean, it might not be good for you. That sin comes out of the human heart. - Jeremiah 17:9

For some reason whenever I see people who profess to being Christian smoking it really turns me off; maybe it's just me. I occasionally see churches with butt cans around outside; apparently they've given up on trying to get people not to smoke.

"All things are permitted for me, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be mastered by anything."—1 Corinthians 6:12

I enjoy cigars and really good tequila. However, if you were against such things I would not drink alcohol or enjoy a cigar around you.
I am addicted to neither and never enjoy either to excess.

However i need to ask the question, why is adultery the only sin you can commit against your own body.
I think we need to look at the following

1 Corinthians 6:16-20
16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

When God created Adam had Eve they became one flesh as a result of having sex.

Genesis 2:24
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Paul quotes this in v16.

When a person becomes a believer they are united with Jesus.

When a believer commits adultery or imorrality they are basically doing something with the body that is joined with an adulteras relationship yet the person is also joined with Jesus.

We need to look at what Paul says a few verses previous

1 Corinthians 6:12-13

Glorify God in Body and Spirit
12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 13 Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

When two people become one the Lord is the third person in this relationship.

The following verse is often quoted at marriage ceremony

Ecclesiastes 4:12
12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

When two people get married they do so before God and promise to keep a lifelong commitment to each other with God as the centre of the marriage.

If we look at 1 Corinthians chapter 7 we see Paul talks about marriage and keeping the marriage sacred as it was always intended to.

Sexual sin has serious consequences.
I know.
I have never commited adultery yet even as an immature Christian I commited fornication, having sex. I was never taught about it.

Yet every time I did the guilt and shame was massive and oppressive.
I cannot make any excuse for what I did but I did so as a result seeking some kind of love as a result of my upbringing.

Lack of love, was sexually abused and a lot more.
Not unusual for a person like to seek sex for reassurance.

Most of my family have committed adultery during my upbringing.

YET

As a result I had a lot of baggage that I carried as result.

In a sense when we have sex we create a soul tie.
I look at this way.
If we have sex with someone then it's like a ruler. The ruler is 30cm long and complete.
Yet when you break the relationship and have sex with someone else the ruler is now broken.

When it is then we have jagged edges. This causes pain, guilt.
Do it again and again we have more jagged edges.

Praise God he healed me of the guilt.

So for me it's a sin against the body because we have body, spirit and soul.
We are united with our partner and Jesus as it was meant to be.

Bring someone else in to it is like asking Jesus to bless and that he will not do or bless.

Sex is just flesh on flesh but it body, mind, spirit and soul.

I hope I make some sense.

But importantly, Paul also said that if someone esteems something to be unclean, it is unclean to them (Rom 14:14). We are called to avoid uncleanness (1 Thes 4:7).

It's not that I'm against it. I'm for something better. Being a Christian isn't about seeing how much we can get away with without going to excess.

Good discussion. We are to be careful with our liberty. For example: Some believers lack the faith to smoke cigars or drink tequila with a clear conscience before the Lord. Between me and them, it is never an issue to handle.

No.

Paul said if some esteems it to be unclean then they should abstain from it.

Would be interested to see how you for the verse you quoted and how it relates to what Paul said

1 Thessalonians 4:7
7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.

I think the thing with sex/adultery or fornication is yes it can create a soul tie that is harmful.

Smoking can be an addiction hard to give up so it it can be similar. It can be toxic you dont know what carcinogens and chemicals you could be inhaling.

the other thing is it really stinks.

I believe you misread my post.

"I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean." - Romans 14:14 KJV

Good point.

I am trying to recall the bible verses where Paul says like you say don't do it if someone thinks it's a sin.

If you don't then do it behind closed doors.
Something along that line.

Like you I enjoyed cigars but would never do Infront of people who would struggle with it as being wrong.

Soul ties for sure.

Any addiction is hard to give up.
It doesn't stop at physical addiction.
There is mental addiction.
Like shopping to feel good.
Like perfume to smell good and so on.

Good point though

Ooh I'm not sure having read the chapter.

If we talk about having a cigar.

Not had one for a few years because was addicted.

However like you I would not smoke in front of someone who would struggle with it.

But I'm sure Paul if it's not a sin for you but may cause a weaker brother to sin (according to the conscience) then have the cigar at home.

Mark 7:15. Smoking is a very destructive addiction, known to be worse than heroin and cocaine. It has caused major suffering, loss of life, and expense to society. But it, in itself, doesn't make one unclean. Peace.

I think drinking alcohol is not a sin in the literal sense. It is a sin to abuse alcohol, not to consume in moderation. After all, Jesus himself and his entourage consumed wine in reasonable quantities. By the way, I recommend looking at the Bible reviews on YouTube from famous historians in order to more accurately familiarize yourself with some things.

Hi all dear brother and sisters. If smoking ciggerettes was classed as a sin, would you obey that law ?

Firstly there is no mention of smoking ciggerettes in our bible, so i can only assume they where not invented then.

However i need to ask the question, why is adultery the only sin you can commit against your own body.

KJ21
Flee fornication. Every other sin which a man doeth is outside the body, but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

I have a strong belief that the five sences of the body all get defiled and polluted when you smoke cigerettes, thus making smoking ciggerettes a sin against the body (the flesh) which then gives a demon the ability to possess the flesh of the body. would this be the same for adultery,
“And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭7:18, 20-23‬ ‭KJV‬‬

I wouldn’t advocate the at anybody smokes because of health reasons , but I think that you are still looking through Moses law

“And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same veil untaken away in the reading of the old testament;

which veil is done away in Christ. But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their heart. Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭3:13-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

so you are looking by your flesh looking at if a man smokes he’s a “sinner and must repent “ or if someone gets a tattoo they are damned , if someone does any work on a sabbath day they’ve sinned , if someone ect

It’s about what Jesus taught you’ll find that focusing on what someone else might be doing wrong in your eyes has become irrelevant and what you yourself might be doing wrong in Jesus eyes according to what he himself said is where your focus should be

I do agree smoking is not a good thing for anyone to ever do it’s bad formoir worldly body , but it’s not going to affect our soul of someone is a smoker

it’s confusing when we try to make two contrary covenants for together it causes a double
Mind

“And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭10:2-9, 11-12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

what Moses wrote was this

“When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.”
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭24:1-2‬ ‭KJV‬‬

That’s contrary instruction of we don’t seperate it it causes a conflict of belief and skewed our judgement making our mind double so I divorce for any reason ? And remarry as many times as I wish ? Like Moses said ?

or do I believe what Jesus said and take marriage as a
Lifetime commitment to the forst spoise I find ? And never divorce unless it’s for the only acceptable cause one person breaking the marriage covenant and defiling the marriage bed otherwise no divorce approved that’s e truth of Gods word the things Jesus taught Moses was speaking to sinners with inrelenrant hard beards it’s different all together

I don’t understand this part. Was it meant for someone else perhaps?
