We know the founders made covenants with God, to obey Him and to make the new world a base from which to spread the good news; and to pass laws that were based on divine principles and His will.
However, how do we know God ever made a covenant with them? Does He make special covenants other than the covenant to forgive our sins through His Son's sacrifice?
Jesus said in Matthew 5: "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.' But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one."
Isn't the "covenant" the founders made with God a bit like an oath?
Based on the patriotic fervor that has gripped certain segments of Christianity, can we now say that for them, patriotism, and the keeping of the covenant made by the founders, has replaced God's true covenant as the means of salvation?
