both Luke and John make it clear that the women went to the tomb on sun. morning.
They went there before Sunday Morning, the book says yet dark in (John 20:1) The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. (2) Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

Nobody knew whether Jesus was gone already or not, Mary Magdalene and the other women were the only ones who got there, and Mary was the very first eyewitness to whom Jesus appeared. I don’t “focus” on her. Her words were the first testimony of His resurrection, like it or not, and it was on Sunday morning.

You have to get three days and three nights. You also have to know when to start the count. Also those with knowledge and understanding knows that God gave man seven days, so Jesus rose on the seven day which was Saturday. But you have to keep in mind that Jesus was the Passover and died on the day of the Passover, which was on Wednesday evening in the middle of the week, according the prophets Daniel. This is when you start your first count. Now the feast of unleavened bread is the next High Holy Sabbath day after the passover. Remember the next day starts at evening, sundown too sundown. So start your count at Wednesday evening and you will end it at Saturday daytime. When Mary came it was still dark.

So Jesus would Have been in the Grave Wednesday night, Thursday daytime and Thursday night, Friday daytime, Friday night, Saturday daytime and Jesus rose right before the sun went down on Saturday. Hence one has the 3 days and 3 nights which Jesus prophesied.

His death Wednesday night is consistent with the comment of the prophet Daniel, stating the Messiah would be cut off (killed) in the midst of the week.
Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week (Wednesday is the middle of the week) he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, (Remember, Jesus is the sacrificial Passover Lamb).

This is a celebration of the first Passover, and the Lord keeps the celebrations of his plans for our salvation accurate. Originally, the blood of the lamb was put on the doorposts on 14 Abib, and that was a Saturday. The angel of death arrived that midnight, taking all who did not have the blood of the lamb on their doorposts.

BroTan is in agreement with the original Passover. Scripture mentions Sunday morning when it speaks of the discovery that Christ arose, but there is no scripture that tells us Christ did not follow the original Passover.

The way I learned it differs very slightly from the chart in that the day begins at dawn.
The Pharisees practiced the sundown start, as did Joseph of Arimathea because he was one.
The disciples practiced days begin at dawn. The Marys went to anoint him but waited until dawn on Sunday because of Sabbath.
He was crucified on the first day of the feast, sabbath, (but not according to the locals).

I hope I don't get attacked for having a different perspective on this. It's barely different and I will gather the evidence of support.
Starting with John 20:1 The first day of the week cometh, when it was yet dark (before sunrise)... day starts at sunrise.

Well, you have to get three days and three night and understand Jesus didn't rise on Sunday at all. In Matthew 28: 1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. 2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: 4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. 5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

With all the scriptures and verses I provided the math should be easy.
Matthew 28: 1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week...

One of many examples that the day starts at dawn. The Pharisee cult practiced days start at sundown.
Gen. doesn't prove anything. There was evening and then there was morning. That marks a day. That junction.

No I don't. Jesus said "IN three days" (John 2:19-20), that's less than three days, the third day is partial. Jesus did not rise during the night, for He was the TRUE LIGHT, and light must be divided from darkness, that's the concept of "day" in Genesis 1:1-5.

I doubt Jesus rose from the grave while it was still daylight on Saturday evening. The Roman guards at the tomb would have had an even trickier time explaining themselves had they been asleep during daylight hours. But we do know he arose before dawn on Sunday morning.
The guards where badly affected when the Angel came down to the tomb.. They did not fall asleep..

(Matthew 28:2-15) "And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. {3} His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: {4} And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. {5} And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. {6} He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. {7} And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. {8} And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. {9} ¶ And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. {10} Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. {11} ¶ Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. {12} And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, {13} Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. {14} And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. {15} So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day."

I hope that I'm not out of line by asking this question, especially since it's very much in line with the present discussion, but I'm curious as to what others here might think about this:

Matthew chapter 12

[38] Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
[39] But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
[40] For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Jesus said that he would "be three days and three nights IN THE HEART OF THE EARTH".

Well, what does THAT mean?

I mean, HIS BODY certainly wasn't "in the heart of the earth" in that it was laid to rest in an ABOVE GROUND TOMB.

How then was he "in the heart of the earth" for "three days and three nights"?

I have some ideas, but I'm curious as to whether or not anybody else here has a good Biblical explanation for this.

Thoughts?
Jonah 2:4-8
4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.

Psalm 30:2-3
2 O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.
3 O Lord, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

1 Peter 3:18-20
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

Ephesians 4:8-10
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

The heart of the earth is where sheol is. Below the mountains, in the deep pit, the lower parts of the earth, etc...

Apparently, part of the sign of Jonah is to be dead in sheol for 3 days and 3 nights and then come back to the land of the living.

I don't think many people understand or accept this. But it seems crystal clear in scripture.

There's also this to consider:

Romans chapter 10

[6] But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above)
[7] Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
[8] But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
[9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
[10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Paul said that Christ "descended into the deep", and the underlying Greek word which is here translated as "deep" is "abyssos ":

https://www.blueletterbible.org/lexicon/g12/kjv/tr/0-1/

This same underlying Greek word appears 8 other times in the New Testament where it is translated as "the deep" (Luke 8:31), as in the place where the legion of demons begged Jesus not to send them, or "the bottomless pit" (Rev. 9:1, 2, 11, 11:7, 17:8, 20:1, 3).

Yes, Jonah was in affliction. His body was in the whale, but his soul was in hell.

If you have 15 minutes. This video has a very good explanation.

The biblical day went from sundown to sundown, 6pm - 6pm.

Leviticus 23:32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.

Genesis 1
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

The bodies could not remain on the cross but had to be taken down by evening, 6pm, because that was the beginning of the high day sabbath.

John
31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

Mark 15:25 25It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.

Mark 15:33 — 33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
This from about noon until 3pm, counting from the days beginning around 6am

Luke 23:44-46 44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
6th hour to 9th hour must have been normally daylight if there became a darkness over it. noon to 3pm

Luke 23:54-56 54It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. 55The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.
preparation day on the Pharisee calendar. the women observed the sabbath.

Mark 15:42-43 42It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, 43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.
Joseph was a Pharisee, albeit saved (probably), and could collect the body because he observed the pharisee sabbath.

Mark 14:1-2 1Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 2"But not during the festival," they said, "or the people may riot."
Jesus did eat the Passover meal on Abib 14 evening with the disciples. He was crucified the next morning on the 1st day of unleavened bread (A holy feast sabbath) but not according to the Pharisee moon clock.

Mark 7:9 KJV - And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
Not the only rebuke from Jesus of those who say they are Yahudi'm and are not, but do lie.

Matthew 28:1 1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
self explanatory. Sabbath ends at dawn, when Sunday begins.

John 20:1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.
John agrees with Matthew. This is Sunday at dawn. Note that Jesus had ALREADY arisen. on Sabbath, before Sunday dawn.

John 20:19 King James Version (KJV) 19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
This is the same Sunday in the evening. Still Sunday. Still first day of the week.

Mark 16:1-2 16 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. This refers to the crucifixion sabbath
2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun.
This is the beginning of the first day of the week. Dawn. The end of the sabbath.

Scripture must All be reconciled. We can't have some true and some not. Our job is to figure out how it all reconciles together.
Through scripture all days begin and end at dawn. Only after the usurpation of the Temple by the Hasmoneans did that change.

This is testified to by the exiled Levitical priests, son's of Zadoch, Self -Identified as such on scrolls in caves near Bethabara.

Even Genisis describes the dawn. There was evening, then there was morning. That is a day.
