But that "perfect" loaf can never be had.

How many different variations can be had off of flour, sugar, water, milk. Butter and eggs is extreme.

Slight variations in quantities or methodology create vastly different products. Slight differences in flour make vastly different products too.

I've been looking for rye meal....haven't found anything lately. I'm needing to start a Sourdough starter for breadmaking....having a hard time. Hopefully I find some soon.
Yes, well... That's why we write a record down, so next time we can be reasonably sure to get pudding when we want pudding or pound cake when we want pound cake.

They're still made to be tweaked though. No recipe is sacrosanct.

Sourdough... How I miss thee. I used to make 30 loaf batches and live on the stuff. The starter has been sitting in the fridge for more than a year now and is probably dead.

Yeah...it's dead.
If you had put some in the freezer you might have had a shot. A very very good shot at starting up again.

Sourdough mothers in the SE and elsewhere tend to go bad from time to time. Usually because of the introduction of bad bacteria. (Very easy to contaminate)

Once you get the lactobaccilli dominant and trained into producing lactic acid and gasses fast enough that is when you freeze a portion....so if you have a starter drift into something horrid and funky you can toss it and start anew....or for your household you can take a break from Sourdough and start back in two days time instead of a week or more. (Usually more)

I need to get a PH meter before I get too far along. And another timer. I'm wanting to train a starter to go really fast. Then abuse it by putting it into the fridge. So when I put bread in a proof box it will make extremely sour Sourdough bread in a few hours.

But soon....soon. got another bakery we are buying out. Might end up with one after all.

I do prefer making main dishes from scratch and I agree the food tastes better. I have also eaten homemade rolls and they taste good; however I do not see myself making breads or desserts from scratch, mainly because it is a hassle working with flour.
That's only if you don't use enough flour and use too much liquids, then it becomes sticky and messy. It only takes a light dusting to prevent it from sticking to surfaces

True. I’ve done the strawberries dipped in white or brown chocolate and then refrigerate for like 4 hours. Soooo good!
Yeah, you can also use other fruits as well, like bananas or celery, pineapple, honey dew or cantelope. Or broccoli and cauliflower.

Now I am getting hungry again and I just had breakfast lol

I used to ask for chicken mcnuggets a lot of the time when I was younger if our family went to mcdonalds instead of the burger

until someone said well they just mushed up chicken scraps nobody else can eat
and then I was kind of put off and when I was grown up I never ordered them again

but then...I do like the hashbrowns that are mashed up grated potato that come in those little paper bags
and nowadays mcdonalds has breakfast menu ALL DAY so if you get there after 10am you can still order breakfast.

my local mcdonalds has become high tech with new touch screens and expanded 2 story plastic playground. Oh and instead of plastic toy happy meals they now give out BOOKS

so I am probably more loyal to maccas than any other burger place

though hells pizza is coming close because they everytime you read 7 books they give you FREE kids pizza.and thats even better

some kids were like but why dont you get Dominos or pizza hut? And Im like, those restaurants arent the ones giving us the free pizzas!

wouldnt it be funny if EVERY restaurant just gave you a free meal after reading 7 books. I'd be into that. I heard one fish and chip shop was doing that down south

for those who object to it being called Hell, is just explain its cos the pizza ovens are HOT. Which is plainly obvious they dont give us frozen pizzas we then have to heat up in the microwave.

Well in a way they are right, i mean study anatomy and find the nugget part of the chicken.... it doesnt exist, but after they take the good meat they take what is left over id say glue it back together but they dont use real glue, its like an edible past maybe water and flour and then construct the nuggets and then bread it.

We have the samething in canada, the stores that have a playplace have a 2 story slide ball pit thing and automatic computer order boards.

Tha means they dont have to hire as many cashiers. We dont have any place that gives out free food for reading books here.

Most places give out free food for filling out a survey on the back of the receipt from the previous purchase.

When you said hells pizza I was thinking another one of Gordon Ramseys restaurants. Like hells kitchen.

Heh... They're right. Nuggets are mostly skin and gristle. Ever pick one apart? Try to find any meat in there.

But wow! You still have playplace AND all day breakfast? They cut out both here. Playplace was cut because in the USA McDonald's... er, Maccas is trying to reinvent itself as a serious restaurant, but without improving the food quality.

All day breakfast was axed during covid. We stopped doing a lot of stuff because of covid. Egg whites, grilled chicken, salads, steak, grilled onion, parfaits, a lot of marginal stuff (things that didn't have a very wide fan base) went by the wayside. All day breakfast didn't draw even as much business as parfaits, so there was no way it was going to survive.

The free pizza here is handled by Pizza Hut, but yeah we do have free pizza for reading books. Odd they don't handle it there... Maybe Hell's Pizza gave the school there a "hot" deal.

See in canada mcdonalds is still mcdonalds, but now they have mccafe. It has a playplace but trying to make it a more sophisticated restaurant more upscale, but will always be fastfood

yea its like that in nz too
theres two counters, the fast food one and then the fancier mccafe one where the coffee is served in actual CUPS and SAUCERS rather than paper cups.

But you are still sitting in the same plastic chairs.

Wait, what? Do they actually have reusable coffee mugs that they wash?

But yeah, it will always be fast "food" no matter how they try to dress it up.

Hey Everyone,

A recent bout with (for me at least) a systematic preventative but not-particularly-pleasant medical routine currently had me thinking about what I personally do when I'm not feeling well physically, emotionally, or spiritually.

First, I made a "nest" for myself consisting of a plethora of (usually 4) pillows and (at least 2) fluffy blankets. Next, I queued up and listened to a sermon from a church I used to attend in another area for a bit of a spiritual boost.

And finally, I had to throw in a little bit of Ultimate Carbie Comfort: saltine crackers and/or potato chips, which are my staple food when I'm not feeling up to par, a can of Sprite (with a straw, of course! You know it's serious when straws are involved,) and maybe later, some mac'n'cheese. Now I know it will probably make some people sick just reading this, but for some reason, junk/fast food is always my first choice when I'm sick (not exactly a healthy decision, I know.) But my normal diet consists of a lot of eggs and vegetables, and those just don't cut it when I'm so nauseous that I can only stand for a couple minutes at a time.

I blame the fact that as a teen, I had a longer-than-expected hospital stay during which I begged my parents to bring me McDonald's "food" because I thought I would starve on all the bland hospital offerings, and so ever since that time, it's been "normal" for me to crave french fries, Chicken McNuggets (specifically McNuggets -- no other brand tastes the same!) and at home, as an easier, cheaper, and fast alternative for something salty, Kraft (gots to be Kraft!) boxed mac'n'cheese.

I guess the good thing about having relatively cheap tastes in comfort food is that it allows me to save more money for the medical bills!

How about the rest of you?

* What are some typical symptoms you always get when you're not feeling well spiritually, mentally, or physically?

* What care routines have you developed to help you recover?

* What are some of your favorite items, foods, and things that you do (or don't do) that you always find soothing?

One of the challenges I find about single life is having to manage our own health care by ourselves, so I think it's interesting to find out how other singles navigate this as well.

Thank you all for sharing, and may God bless your health and well-being in all ways. :)
Pizza but it must have pineapple. Hot crispy chips with chicken salt but not with the pizza.
Anything coffee and chocolate.

there was a big to do many years ago when one of the childrens hospitals opened a mcdonalds. The hospital food was so dire that no children would eat it and they had to resort to mcdonalds.

You would think in a hospital they would serve healthy nourishing foods but no, its usually tasteless slop

for me it was exotic though, I dont usually eat mashed potatoes, and cheese sandwiches.

when you are ill, I think the best thing to eat is soup. Your body cant handle too much stodginess.

though hospitals are often not he best places to actually recover. Sometimes they make you more ill. And medicine tastes disgusting.

Thats the american system and capitolism at its best, the capitolize on others misfortunes. By serving mediocre food the save money and maximize profits, by giving bare minimum care and maximizing prescriptions they maximize profits.

By building a mcdonalds they keep people sick with fatty greasy food, the patient pays to stay sick and the hospital gets a portion of the restaurants profits.

If people made changes to diet and lifestyle they could prevent most illnesses and reduce the risk of ending up in an american hospital.

I think it was Michael Moore who said that according to statistics a baby born in El Salvadore has a better chanxe of survival than a baby born in Detroit.

A medical system becomes a multi billion dollar industry has incentive to keep people sick because it doesnt profit off healthy people.

well pharmac has a lot to answer for.
I dont know why nz hospitals has bought into it. The apa system is also a mess.
Mcdonalds does sponsor ronald mc donalds houses so parents can stay with their sick children in hospitals too ...but its kinda like robbing Peter to pay Paul

I jnow about the ronald mcdonald houses, their is one near mcmaster hospital in Hamilton. But our hospitals have tim hortons, brantford general has 2 or 3 of them, one in the main enterance, one in the new out patient wing and I think one in the psychiatric ward.

But the food the hospital serves the patients isnt too bad given the diverse health problems and all the special diet requests they have to deal with.

Ask your doctor or a cardiologist and tell me what they say. You can also ask a dietician or nutritionist.

Im placing my money that they will tell you home cooked chicken is best for you.

Yeah, well... They also say you should eat kale. Doctors don't know what they're talking about. No way something that tastes that bad can be any good for you.

I dont have a cardiologist
my doctor you have to pay to see her
I dont know any dietician or nutriontionist, do you?

How much money are you going to bet. I asked between the two mcnuggets or kfc.
not homecooked, although you can cook mcnuggets and kfc at home (if you have a pressure cooker or deep fryer, which I do not)
