In Matthew 5, the Scripture says:

“You have heard that it was said to those [d]of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother [e]without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’[f] shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, [g]‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of [h]hell fire. 23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift." - v. 21-25

and

“You have heard that it was said [i]to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to [j]sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to [k]sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell" - v. 27-30

A thought that occurred to me the other day was this:

When a Christian tries to point out to someone else (either a nonbeliever or fellow Christian) how easy it is to fall into sin and that sin begins in the heart, why is the lust & adultery passage used much more often than the anger & murder passage?

Is it because it's generally easier to lust after someone sexually than it is to be angry at someone without just cause? Related to that, is it easier to keep lust hidden than to keep unjust anger hidden?

Your thoughts?

I’ve thought about that also I think to have lust is much more common than to have enough anger to do harm and kill.

it seems more relatable sexual lust is something I would guess most men ,especially , deal with sin it seems more common and relatable to more folks and maybe that’s why it’s used to highlight that more

it’s really an important aspect what your talking about how sin is rooted in our heart lust , leads to commiting sins motivated by that lust . Hate and grudge bearing leads to sins motivated by those factors . Greed leads to sin , envy , lust ect

the gospel is so important because he’s teaching us these valuable truths that teach us how to get free of the bonds

when we just look at the commission of the sin , it can never address the root cause or remove the bonds it has on our body . When we’re blind to the internal corruption that’s cause of our wrong actions it leaves us on a trap or snare d we’re incapable of escaping because we don’t realize we are caught on the devils trap

as we hear the gospel message things like about how sin is actually coming from inside our mind and heart , to acknowledge these thkngs is able to set us free of satans dominion over our flesh

“in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭2:25-26‬ ‭KJV‬

the truth we need to acknowledge is the gospel Christ taught

“Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”
‭‭John‬ ‭18:37‬ ‭KJV‬‬

by herring Jesus teachkngs of internal thkngs and things we hadn’t known like the inner workings of sin in our hearts through lust , anger , pride ect as we accept these thkngs and believe they are true d continue on following after this faith this happens

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:31-32, 34, 36‬ ‭KJV‬‬

importantly Jesus is not saying everyone is now free because I’m going to die for sin , Jesus is saying clearly what he conti ually said “ if you hear and accept and believe my word , you shall be free of satans dominion and have eternal
Life in my kingdom “

he says also “ if you reject my words your going to be judged by those words of mine you reject “

We can be free of sins dominion over us and let Christ and his good will bring us to repentance and reign in our life but the only key in the earth is to accept the gospel the thkngs God taught us to believe with all our heart and follow where he leads us

because the issue is inside our mind and heart like your understanding it takes the knowledge of Christ in our mind and heart to correct and cut out the evil me fill us with the righteous knowledge of Jesus Christ that permeates the pages of the gospel

Sometimes it is that a sin began in the heart and other times it isn't. God knows the difference and sometimes so do we.

The one who does not love remains in death. Everyone who hates his brother
is a murderer, and you know that eternal life does not reside in a murderer.
yes sister I was answering his question why people use one example of lust , more than hate in Jesus teachkngs there. When they are explaining the connection between the inner lust and outer deeds we do from the inner lust or whatever corruption it is

lust leads us to commit some types of sin , greed leads us to commit another type of sin , pride yet other types of sins , envy and jealousy other types of sins ect

if we can let the gospel change the things we treasure in our heart d thkngs we allow to dwell in our thought life we get a lot of freedom from sins control and the bite it has on us before we know about this inner condition

my belief is our battle is internal in our minds and hearts our desires and lusts

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭10:3-5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

I. Prices when I was young I thought a lot about the opposite sex in appropriately and it seemed just normal to have inappropriate thoughts . But also I became a bit of a fornicator and ot didn’t seem like a big deal really I mean I knew I wasn’t supposed to be like that but it seemed normal “all men are this way “

what I learned in the gospel is about the connection of what we allow to be our thought life we sometimes have thoughts that just occur but I learned we can remove and reject those thoughts and not allow them in our heart and mind and replace them with thoughts d considerations and pondering from the gospel

I learned that this changes everything regarding “ we’re all just lost sinners who can’t change all men are this way “ because the more we allow Gods word to become our thoughts and desires , the less pull d place those other thoughts and actions have place on our life

I no longer allow lustful thinking in my mind I’ve gotten old now but overcame this by even watching what I watch in movies or even sometimes these days commercials can really throw a lustful thought at you , ot the internet adds can through lustful thinking at you in these modern days temptations are everywhere but temptation always begins with the wrong thinking and us embracing it

I’m far from perfect but I believe that the gospel has the power to change a somewhat corrupted mind by sin d the lusts in the world around us so present alwaysbit seems to mknds and hearts that are thinking forward to the lord and the glory he’s promised us when our time is done in earth

he can change our minds and the “ spirit “ that dwells in it

“that ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:22-24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

as we learn the gospel but each day and through our lives letting Hids word fill our mind is able to cleanse our mind and teach us what’s not acceptable to harbor and dwell on because of this connection between what we allow in our heart and mind and what we actually end up doing

Eventually we can take in whole sections of Paul’s writings like this and don’t have to ask what he’s meankng or reject any part of it but we start understanding this is all about a change a transformation beginning in our faith what is not we believe inside our mind and heart ? And do we allow sin to permeate within ?

so this makes more sense if we don’t take it one scriotire at a time but as a message of encouragement and hope and also informative and instructive but it’s showing us that it’s about this change the gospe is able to make in and for us

as we learn more we can start seeing it like we’re dead and raised with Jesus like Roman’s 6 says and then

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: for which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: in the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And

above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:1-10, 12-14, 16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

what we allow on our minds and heart can be the world and it’s lusts of the gospel d the perfect will
Of God . Whichever we embrace is going to be the direction we choose to go . We need truly to hear and believe the gospel and we shall be saved

everything begins within us where the issues lie Lust , greed , pride , envy , grudge bearing and hate ect any of those types of things we need to repent of because that’s why we are commiting sins of those types

In Matthew 5, the Scripture says:

The message God is sending us with these scriptures is that the law under Moses (you have been told) remains the same law but under Moses it was given in earthly terms without love and could be obeyed by the letter of the law. It was imperfect. Christ gave us the same law, but it was a spiritual law given to our hearts. For example. the law not to murder under Moses and Christ was the same but it changed for us when we obey not to murder with our hearts.

Your post is excellent, as long as the plain message of that scripture is acknowledged. Scripture has hidden meanings as well as what is plainly stated.

I think people usually rationalize their anger and think it is justified whether it is or not. As to where most people (Christians, anyway) that have adulterous desires know it is wrong in any case; and might even charge themselves with lust for finding someone who isn't their spouse remotely attractive.

The section on anger is wordier and more nuanced, too; as to where the lust one plainly says it's a kind of adultery. I think people tend to like stuff that is easy to explain. If you want to talk about the anger verses you have to go into all of these Jewish elements of his wording, and I know there are Christians that can't be bothered to learn about Judaism, let alone bother someone else with Judaism.

“that the law under Moses (you have been told) remains the same law”

“For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭7:12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever After the order of Melchisedec.

For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭7:11, 15-19‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the promise of another covenant not according to Moses word made from Sinai

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭31:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

That promise came with Christ , the law and the gospel

“The law and the prophets were until John:

since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭16:16‬ ‭

(the law of Moses word until John )

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

( the word of Jesus Christ the lord the gospel ) but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:38-39‬ ‭KJV‬‬

you can’t treat a person like Moses commanded and also like Jesus commanded they cannot be placed in the same box they are as different as night and day

take revenge an eye for an eye said Moses

no don’t do that said Jesus do what I’m saying instead of what moses said

if your married and not happy get divorced and remarry said moses

no don’t do that said Jesus do what I’m saying instead

it’s as simple as it says the law of moses lasted until Christs anointing tomoresch the gospel until Jesus spoke all the gospel and shed his blood at that point Jesus becomes the one and only mediator between God and man on earth

what that means is moses word can no longer create a relationship with God only the words of Christ can do that d they are s opposite as Jesus the sinless and moses the murderer

I'm a little late in the game here, but lust can cover a huge amount of sins across the flesh spectrum, making it a sin at the top of the sin list.
1John 2:15Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

In the flesh, we lust after everything(food, power, popularity, sex, worldly knowledge, & the list goes on.
Wanting to be the Big Man On Campus is a lust sin.
There's not a sin we commit without there being worldly lusts in it. (except maybe the sin of omission)

Christ made a great change in how the Lord communicates with man. The Lord spends a lot of time explaining his ways and policies to man. We must understand this change, and it seems there are as many differences of opinion as there are people.

The bottom line is that the Lord never changes, all the attributes, the commands, everything if from this unchanging God, yet there is a change between what the Lord gave Moses to tell us and what Christ tells us. They are both from an unchanging God, so we need to look for the sameness in the message, not the change.

To not steal, lie, or murder is in the new covenant and in the old covenant. That did not change. But the command under Moses not to murder is very very different from the command not to murder under Christ. Moses did not teach love, Christ did. The command to use fleshly rituals like cutting flesh as in circumcision in order to explain and be reminded of true spiritual circumcision changed. They used these rituals under Moses, but Christ brought in the holy spirit, speaking to our spirits, that does what the fleshly commands did.

I think its because in your country, or most countries, if you convicted you can get put in jail for murder, but few people get put in jail for adultery.

In Bible times murder was a life for a life I think and adultery was punished by stoning (sometimes to death)

if the woman fell pregnant I think the priest made her drink something to abort the child. Im sure that is in the Bible somewhere. Her life might be spared but the child was not.

Davids child with Bathesheba died. But he and Bathsheba were given mercy. David killed Uriah or had a hand in his death.
