Hi Everyone,

You might remember the old children's show, "Lamb Chop's Play-Along" that put this lovely little ear worm into everyone's heads:

These past few months I have been spending most of my free time writing and studying, and among my scattering of notebooks, papers, and highlighter is a plain black Bic Cristal pen with a clear base that has looked "empty" for at least 2 weeks. But yet, it keeps right on writing, despite my constant, daily use. Every morning I wonder if this will be finally be the day when this "super pen" gives up the very last drop of ink.

This seemingly insignificant pen made me think of a friend I had in college who had an old Volkswagen Jetta (car) that, to any outsider, would seem like it was on it's last legs (wheels.) But that thing literally took every kind of beating -- and just kept on running. She racked up countless miles (and it was already well over the 100,000 mark, though I can't remember exactly by how much;) she drove it through every kind of bad weather and in all extremes; she got into an accident that probably should have totaled the car (she was fine, praise God,) but yet that thing kept right on going -- and we finally just started calling it, "The Super Jetta."

She would come into work on Mondays and we'd all ask her, "How did The Super Jetta hold up this weekend?" Unfortunately, I lost touch with her, but I have often wondered how much longer after college the infamous Super Jetta kept running, or if she traded it in before it finally conked out. It was one of those vehicles that was an absolute legend of its time.

There was no doubt she had gotten her money's worth out of that car -- kind of like I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of this humble little ink pen (will TODAY be the day it finally gives up the goat???) I have a stack of notes I have to go through and rewrite, so will THIS actually be The Final Countdown?!

What about you?

* What are some things (or even people) in your life that truly "went the distance" -- and then some? Have you ever had anything go the extra mile like that since?

* Have you ever had a product, person, or situation that you were betting against ("That's never going to work/last") but discovered that you were wrong, and the outcome totally shocked you?

* If you've ever had something that completely outperformed your expectations, did you try to replace it when it finally gave out? Was the replacement just as good, or was it a "once in a lifetime" experience?

I know it's a lighter topic and it's open to anyone, but this pen brought back some fond memories, and now it has me wondering about all of yours. :)

God so far is the only thing that has outlasted everything. Actually now that I think about it I still have my green sleeping bag from when I was 12. I cant fit into it but it zips up. 3rd place might go to my washing machine. Its washed everything but my sins but that went to the 1st place getter ;)

I had heard of Lamb Chop, was it a ventriloquist act? And can you get a new ink thingamajig for your old but trusty pen?

ETA Im really enjoying your threads, you touch on light and heavy subjects and thats a nice balance :)

Hi Narrow,

I really enjoy the stories you share! God is #1 always and of course, but I love little tidbits like this. The things that were so precious to us in the moment and that we wish we still had.

Washing machines are awesome! My grandparents had an original washing machine that lasted something like 30 years before it finally sputtered up its last wash. :)

I recently found an old recipe for a bean pie that my Mom used to make and I thought was lost. I remember the crust had sour cream in it, but when I tried looking up recipes online, nothing sounded similar.

I finally found the original copy in an old recipe box she gave me. It's worn, torn, and tattered almost to the point of no longer being readable I'm so happy that I'll be able to salvage it before it's too late! The best part is that it still has the original notes my Mom made for her own "tweaks."

I hope you find another reliable sleeping bag, or maybe a big comfy blanket as a modern rendition! :)

Yes! Good call. :)

Shari Lewis was Lamp Chop's "voice" and host of the show.

Sorry for the odd placement but I copied this off her Wikipedia article.

Unfortunately, the pen I'm using is in one of those inexpensive cheap 10-count packs, but at least I have another one ready to go. :)

I'm glad you're here and enjoying the discussions! Thanks for the mention of including both light and heavy topics. I definitely like to do a little of each, and I always get a kick out of meeting people in person and hearing them say I am the same way in real-life conversations!

Did your grandparents have the washers that had that wringer arm? I loved that and of course my siblings took turns wearing scarves to see how far we could go! Thats awesome you have your moms old recipe, although Ive never had bean pie I imagine if your mom made it, it was made with love.
I think this is why I love everything vintage. so many fond memories of my childhood. You got a knack for writing. Maybe thats why your pen was waiting for you. :)

Ive not met anyone from a Christian site, I guess its a bit safer than other sites lol

I'm not sure if my grandparent's machine had the wringer arm, I just remember it was that green avocado color that was all the rage in the 70's (?)! :)

My Mom was never much into cooking, I guess that's why the few recipes I remember are special to me :). She took care of us just fine, it's just that cooking wasn't her particular love or knack.

Vintage things can be awesome!!! What kinds of things are you into? If it were up to me, I'd probably collect those amazing old Victorian-style teacups, but I don't have the cash or the space, so it keeps me under control.

Lol. Loved what you said about "my pen waiting for me." I go in phases and right now just happens to be a "writing phase." Sometimes it's due to depression, etc., but thankfully right now I guess God has just blessed me with a little extra oomph. :D Speaking of pens, I've always wanted to dabble in things like fountain pens and fancy inks, but man, it looks like a very slippery (and expensive) slope that I'm better of watching from the sidelines.

Thank you very much for your kindness -- if you like threads, @Lanolin has some really good ones too. In fact, I think she's written almost as many or maybe even more than I have, and in much less time! o_O:D

Getting to know someone online definitely takes a lot of time and effort. I used to do so back in the day with just paper letters, so when the internet hit, it felt like an extension of that. You do what seems best for you under God's leading and don't feel any rush or pressure.

The people I met in person were ones I've been corresponding with both here and in chats since about 2014, so it certainly didn't happen overnight.

In fact, if someone were to write and ask me, "So when can we meet up in real life?" Depending on who it was and how it was going, I might actually say, "Oh, maybe after we've kept up a steady written communication for 2 or 3 years..." Ha!

I know, I know.

Ain't nobody got time for dat!

It's just that some of us started talking here and never left, until we one day we finally all decided that maybe everyone else wasn't just a bunch of weirdos after all and were actually safe to meet.

But I encourage anyone to go at their own pace, no matter how long that might be! That's actually one of the ways I've asked God to let me know if I'm supposed to stay in someone's life or not, and vice versa -- if they have the patience to work out a compromise with me that will most likely take quite a bit of time.

I have an appreciation for mostly vintage furniture or fashion. I can happily spend a whole day in an antique store or museum!
Its so interesting that artists go through periods of mental illness but out of that comes so much creativity. The silver lining?
Ive seen Lanolin around. She has a quirky sense of humour lol Reminds me of that comedian Ally Wong ha!

That is really testing their patience lol but a true genuine friendship is the reward. The art of letter writing is something the younger generation could try, I recall when penpals was the coolest thing ever and how excited it would be to go to the mail box and see a letter with their handwriting. It took ages which made it even more special.
Gosh where is everyone today? maybe they are all sleeping?

This is the ThinkPad that never ends
Yes it goes on and on my friend
Some people started using one
Not knowing what it was
And they'll continue using one
Forever just because...

I swear those things will never die. Every ThinkPad I ever had is (as far as I know) still living long after technology has moved on past it and you wish it would die so you could justify buying a new, modern laptop.

I've thrown Dells away.
I've thrown Asus away.
I've thrown Fujitsus away.
I've never thrown a ThinkPad away. They were always still happily running long after they were too archaic to be useful to me any more.

The only thing to do with a ThinkPad is give it away. Somewhere, somebody will need an old, basic laptop to use for basic stuff like youtube and ebay and facebook.

It's still early morning in the USA, where a lot of the user base is. Still a lot of "don't talk to me until I've had my coffee" going on in these parts. Give it time.

It's so nice to meet someone else who also loves letters and hand writing. I've always thought of handwriting as our own God-given personal fonts. For me, the best part of the day was seeing if there was anything cool in our mailbox! (Yes, I'm a nerd.)

Don't worry I think for most people who frequent here, it's the middle of the night.

I'm sure there will be others here to rescue you from being just stuck with me soon! :p:cool::giggle::geek:

According to the Fallout series of video games, war is eternal. Every game begins the first intro video and ends the last monologue after you beat the game with the same line: "War... War never changes."

Ecko goes on and on. It used to be Swing-A-Way, but then Ecko sold the Swing-A-Way name to a cheaper company. Now to get a real one you have to know to get an Ecko.

It's a manual can opener. I've had one for... What, 25 years now? 27? A long, long time. And it still cuts through the lids of cans just like it did the first day I bought it.
