A few years ago I worked with a guy that delved into esoteric (hidden) teachings. And some pretty wild ideas sprang from there.

The short version: This world is Hell.
Which is why fallen Lucifer is lord here after his fall and ours.
And Jesus came to the earth of old to provide an exit for those who believe. Which is the meaning of that passage some believe has him ministering to those in Hell after his crucifixion.
That wasn't some place. That was this place after he ascended.
So as bad as we were prior to his arrival, God let this world remain in the power of the evil one after Jesus showed a way to freedom from it.
When Adam and Eve fell, so too did the world.
