2WD is much cheaper in the long run and usually they still give you a 4WD suspension on a 2WD vehicle....not a vast improvement but better than otherwise.

Agreed. Always a good idea to keep the costs down. 4WD is like a few times more likely to have a transmission failure over the lifespan of the vehicle.

My 1993 Chevy's got over 400K miles and still kicking. It could use a paint and upholstery job though.

Yeah but it sure is hard to find a gas station on that trip.

Yep, assuming a gas mileage of 15 mpg for older trucks, and a distance of 400K miles, that trip would require 27,000 gallons of gas. The average price of gas in the US between 1993 and 2022 at $2.17 for regular, then the cost of this trip would be $58,000.

Don't forget a new battery or two, probably at least one replacement alternator and a few dozen oil changes.
