The book of John shows how to know you have eternal life. Know you have faith . .. and that is by believing Jesus is God, that He lived sinless... that He died and rose again. That by entrusting eternal life Him you are saved.

So you won't know because you are good or do good works..but because you believed in Jesus.

Faith though is a gift of the Holy Spirit.. along with hope and love. Because for a saved person they are supernaturally empowered by Jesus in the believers walk with Him.

Faith, hope and love trump all other gifts of the Holy Spirit.

I believe the sign and ministry gifts were for the apostles who have passed..and we have the completed Word for our guide. The Holy Spirit prompting us thru our reliance on the Word. So no need for tongues .. gift of knowledge.. prophecy etc.

But if you are going to believe all the gifts are for today.. then they must work as the Bible has them.. by those standards. The Corinthians were abusing the gifts .. and shouldn't be an example to follow .
amen I've also learned that the essence of faith is hope, and its being in that state of hope that the Lord will provide is what will help you to give back.

It's a daily renewing of the mind where you sit in silence with the holy spirit, in hope where your faith grows. I find a simple prayer like how can I please you today lord and can you guide my steps works for me in faith. then I sit in silence and I get revalations, I learned this from Angus Buchan.

Considering the weighted controversy on gifts of the Holy Spirit, I'd say for myself that I'm very happy just with faith. But maybe the Spirit didn't really give me faith, and how would you know? I might just be playing up, and faith is harder to test than prophecy.

What do people think of all the "develop faith" guidebooks that sell in Christian Book stores? I mean if it's a gift of the Spirit, it might be something that you can't develop or acquire for yourself, any more than "vision" (any of you blokes ever gone on an "Iron John vision quest"? just asking.)

Does anyone have any thoughts on the connection between the passage on Spiritual gifts and the passage that immediately follows it about the members of the church body? The church all has to be together to function, what about the councils of elders with spiritual gifts? Do all the gifts have to be there for the Dreidel to roll, in a manner of speaking?

And how would you know? Because some bright sparks just seem to learn foreign languages easily, and I've had teachers of school subjects that weren't religious even in name who were diligent and even talented speakers.
Think about this did you ever wonder why there is so much confusion and skeptism? I meanThe gifts themselves are often times argued about some even arguing they aren't for today for one reason or another.

By all accounts for instance if you look in scripture on the gifts of the holy spirit we should not only be able to do all the things the apostles did but we should if the holy spirit is in us have the same power and authority they stood in.

The holy spirit is the holy spirit he doesn't change only we do.
There is a reason you don't see many people doing things like this and even when you do it isn't on the same level as the apostles. They clearly had something we don't a presence to the point where Peters shadow healed people

We talk about faith but real faith would dictate we mean it when we say anything is possible with God.We live in an unbeliving generation look at every verse in scripture that speaks of who we are in Christ what we would do with the holy spirit and faith every verse that speaks of us and the kingdom honestly try it but the method we are using isn't working why are we still doing it?

We are supposed to be different we are supposed to be alian and strange to the world if we just blend in with the world what does that say about our faith and the God we serve?

The answer is right in front us we have read it many times already

I'm trying to spend time on that. The spiritual gifts chapter is right before the body of Christ chapter. It's like studying the constitution at Hillsdale, there are all these levels and offices in the state, and the amendments come along over time. All one constitution, thought.

That's another interesting parallel that I want to follow through on, Paul was very much a law scholar, he had his trial in Rome and those post assassination people were really rioting and abusing the laws. That happened in the time of Nero, who was then at war against Persia, which was why he did that, as a Jew. Paul knew about some of the problems within Israel in the synagogue, including very likely the relationship between Judas and Caiaphas, as well as him seeing that Jesus was descended from David (Jesse's son, the line of Kings) and that was why he'd taken it up with Nero. By contrast, John the Baptist was all prophet, a spiritual Jew who may have had Levite status in the state in his own lineage, meaning that of course the different tribes, each with a patriarch son of Abraham the first patriarch, had a council of elders in the state one from each tribe, which may have been what the disciples were. Fascinating.

If you think you have faith more than just common faith you just have to go with it, no one can tell you.

I am having a conversation with a friend about when Jesus said that with the faith of a mustard anything is possible with God the the we spoke about was about if he was just speaking to the apostles and I gave him a scenery which actually may be a real thing that someone wrote sometime actually I can't remember but just in case lets say it is

So if Jesus says with the faith of a mustard seed anything is possible with God I can only imagine myself before him on his throne and he asks about what he said he would say what did I say? I say anything is possible with God I then try to then say my piece after explaining my view point and he would stop me and ask again I give the same but again try to interject but he stops me again And says no what did I say. I trspond once more and he says are you calling me a liar?
