MacArthur Park

I posted The Rain, The Park, and Other Things a while back, by the Cowsills... and that song
cannot be mentioned without this classic by Richard Harris (RIP) being brought to mind as
well. Jimmy Webb wrote this for The Association, but with the ambitious arrangement and
unorthodox lyrics, the song was rejected by the group. Webb did not take Harris seriously
when he petitioned him for a song he could sing (he was an actor, not a singer). However,
Harris persisted, and the rest, as they say, is history .. By the way, the song lyrics are things
that really happened in MacArthur Park during his relationship with Susie Horton, where the
couple would occasionally meet for lunch and spent their most enjoyable times together.

James Webb, songwriter, composer, and singer, has written numerous platinum-selling songs,
including"Up, Up and Away," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "MacArthur Park," "Wichita Lineman,"
"Worst That Could Happen," "Galveston," and "All I Know." He had successful collaborations with
Glen Campbell (who also recorded MacArthur Park), Michael Feinstein, Linda Ronstadt, the 5th
Dimension, the Supremes, Art Garfunkel, and Richard Harris. I never did care for Donna Summers'
version of this classic, first released as sung by Richard Harris in the summer of 1968.

Webb was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Nashville Songwriters
Hall of Fame in 1990. He received the National Academy of Songwriters Lifetime Achievement
Award in 1993, the Songwriters Hall of Fame Johnny Mercer Award in 2003, the ASCAP "Voice of
Music" Award in 2006, and the Ivor Novello Special International Award in 2012. According to BMI,
his song "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" was the third most performed song in the 50 years between
1940 and 1990. Webb is the only artist ever to receive Grammy Awards for music, lyrics and orchestration.

Gordon Lightfoot “Rainy Day People” (1975 )

Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr. CC OOnt (November 17, 1938 – May 1, 2023) was a Canadian singer-songwriter
and guitarist who achieved international success in folk, folk-rock, and country music. He is credited with
helping to define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s. He has been referred to as Canada's greatest
songwriter and his songs have been recorded by some of the world's most renowned musical artists.
Lightfoot's biographer Nicholas Jennings said, "His name is synonymous with timeless songs about
trains and shipwrecks, rivers and highways, lovers and loneliness."

To stay in shape to meet the demands of touring and public performing, Lightfoot worked out in a gym
six days per week, but declared in 2012 that he was "fully prepared to go whenever I'm taken." He calmly
stated, "I've been almost dead a couple times, once almost for real ... I have more incentive to continue
now because I feel I'm on borrowed time, in terms of age." Lightfoot's band members displayed loyalty
to him, as both musicians and friends, recording and performing with him for as long as 45 years.

As an individual, apart from various awards associated with his albums and singles, Gordon Lightfoot
received sixteen Juno Awards—for top folk singer in 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969,[78] 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976,
and 1977, for top male vocalist in 1967, 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1973, and as composer of the year in 1972
and 1976. He received ASCAP awards for songwriting in 1971, 1974, 1976, and 1977, and was nominated
for five Grammy Awards. In 1974 Lightfoot's song "Sundown" was named pop record of the year by the
Music Operators of America. In 1980 he was named Canadian male recording artist of the decade,
for his work during the 1970s.

Lightfoot was chosen as the celebrity captain of the Toronto Maple
Leafs for the NHL's 75th anniversary season in 1991–1992.

Lightfoot was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986and the Canadian Country Music Hall
of Fame in 2001. He was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 1998. In May 2003 he was made a Companion
of the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honour. Lightfoot was a member of the Order of Ontario,
the highest honour in the province of Ontario. In 1977, he received the Vanier Award from the Canadian Jaycees.
In 2007 Canada Post honoured Lightfoot and three other Canadian music artists (Anne Murray, Paul Anka, and
Joni Mitchell) with postage stamps highlighting their names and images. On June 24, 2012, Lightfoot was
inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in a New York City ceremony, along with Bob Seger.

He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Trent University in spring 1979 and on June 6, 2015,
Lightfoot received an honorary doctorate of music in his hometown of Orillia from Lakehead University.

In November 1997, the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, Canada's highest honour in the performing arts, was
bestowed on Lightfoot. Lightfoot was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in May 2003. On February 6, 2012,
Lightfoot was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

On June 16, 2014, Lightfoot was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by SOCAN at the 2014 SOCAN Awards in Toronto.

In 2017, Lightfoot rated fifth in the CBC's list of the 25 best Canadian songwriters ever,
and his biographer, musician Ronnie Hawkins, called Lightfoot the greatest songwriter
in the world.He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

He was the subject the 2019 documentary Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind.

In 2022, Lightfoot received the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement. wiki

Lots of 60s and 70s favorites, but there seem to be a dearth of 'big band jazz' favorites. So, I'm going to submit one of Henry Mancini's greatest hits, " Peter Gunn" This tune has been recorded and rerecorded so many times and by so many different orchestras down the years. It's still a jass favorite.

I'm cheating a little bit as Mancini made his first recording in 1959. But I did listen to it in the 60's as it was the theme song to TV's 1960's 'Peter Gunn Show'. This is the version I remember:

I loved the music from the 60's and 70's grew up with the great music. I loved The Carpenters, Bee Gees, Chicago, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, and Elvis. There were so many groups in those days, and some are still around today.

1st, i'm going to say that i'm not trying to sway anyone's music preference or push any particular bands music & i certainly know that this site is a Christian site comprised of born again Christians. there have been rumors of many bands that they were involved with the devil. by course, we definitely know just by lyrics that some bands were working with the devil. petty, madonna, hall & oates, ozzy, sting, prince, zeppelin, bowie, brian adams, etc. so with this last led zeppelin reference, i'm suggesting a listen to Tea For One by Led Zeppelin. this tune is dimensionally constructed, contains contrapuntal arrangements, superb talent all the way around, in depth emotion, mature composition wholly & is a great tune to listen by yourself with no background noise. ladies & gentlemen, take a concentrated listen to the song.
