That said the best I can tell the meteor is behind the sun making it very difficult for any of our telescopes to see and will take about 14 days to hit the US once it passes the sun. If it is in the glare of the sun you wouldn't put a telescope on it and you wouldn't see it at night.

Prior to the internet there were no internet rumors.

Prior to the TV no propaganda and fear mongering on the TV.

Prior to the Radio no propaganda or fear mongering over the radio.

So prior to WW1 we had a tiny, tiny fraction of a percent of the wars and rumors of wars we have now.

Also, prior to the atomic bomb wars around the world were not as threatening as they are now.

Also, after WWII we see the intelligence agencies of the US, UK, Russia and others using the spread of rumors as a psyop which was not nearly as common prior to the world wars.
