1 Thessalonians: 22-25
21 But prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 22 From all appearance of evil refrain yourselves. 23 And may the God of peace himself sanctify you in all things; that your whole spirit, and soul, and body, may be preserved blameless in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He is faithful who hath called you, who also will do it. 25 Brethren, pray for us.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24~ May the God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He Who calls you is faithful, and He will do it. :)

Can a Person be Saved Without Being Sanctified?
When a person is born again (saved), he or she is (at that point) sanctified. God begins the process of conforming the believer to the image of His Son ... which is a continuous and ongoing process until the day of redemption ... when the purchased possession (the believer) is fully transformed and is as He is

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

This is actually a really interesting question and poll. On one hand the gut reaction is No of course nothing unholy shall enter into the Kingdom of God it is written. On the otherhand there is room for a technicality, that is, Jesus says in the famous verses that if your eye is evil to pluck it out for it's better to enter life with one eye than to go to hell, and if your hand offends to cut it off and castit away because it is better to enter life with one hand that to be thrown into hell. In this principle, it could be argued to vote Yes, that say a person is sanctified, but their hand for instance is unsanctified, therefore unholy, and they cut that hand off and cast it away; then would just the unholy hand be thrown into the hellfire but the rest of the sanctified person would enter into life. If this is the case then technically a person with an unsanctified part could be saved from the hellfire, however, they would have to of course cut the unsanctified part off or elsewise sanctify it, because the nothing that is unsanctified (literally unholy) will enter the Kingdom.

I will wait a little bit before I vote, curious to see where this discussion may pan out to, but I will make a Yes or No vote here after some chances for others to dispute or vote. Leaning No still at the moment, but open to hearing arguments for Yes.

Sanctification happens in 3 stages
1. at salvation you were Sanctified-past / been saved
2. Through spiritual maturity you are going through -progressive sanctification/being saved -present
3. When we meet Jesus we will be fully sanctified-future

So my answer no -because the initial sanctification happens automatically when you are saved at confessing belief in Christ. All who meet Jesus have a level of sanctification.

yes ... and until then, we are but children and see through a glass darkly ...

1 Corinthians 13:

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

no. what's the point in being saved without being sanctified? what are you going to learn? you won't have the H.S. living inside you, you will not be anxious for Jesus & you won't reach your full potential in life.

Hello @RaceRunner, outside of something like a "deathbed conversion" (where a new believer dies immediately after coming to faith in Christ), someone who God has regenerated, caused to be born again, justified and saved, immediately begins to be sanctified by Him (and we join Him in the process of sanctification as well, more and more as we are able to .. e.g. Philippians 1:6, 2:12-13).

The Lord came here and died to save us from our sins, not to give us a license to sin even more (IOW, not to give us a "get out of Hell for free card" if you will ) Salvation then, is from both the penalty of sin AND from the power of sin (from the power/sway that it held over us in this life prior to salvation).

So, our salvation ALWAYS results in the many things that accompany salvation .. e.g. Hebrews 6:9 cf Ephesians 2:10 (including things like good works/deeds done in righteousness, the new desire to please and glorify God 24/7 instead of ourselves, the ability/desire to live penitent/righteous/holy lives, instead of the sinful ones that we used to live as unbelievers, etc.).

As Reformer John Calvin once said (as did Luther, BTW, both of whom taught that "salvation is by faith alone"/sola fide),

"We are justified by faith alone, but the faith that justifies is never alone."

God bless you!!

~Deuteronomy
p.s. - if someone, who claims to be a Christian, desired salvation to escape the fires of Hell (in the age to come) has no desire to be delivered from their worldliness and carnality (in this life), then their "claim" of having become a believer should not be considered to be true!

Hello FollowingtheWay, I don't think that I'd put it in quite the same way that you just did , but I certainly agree with you that massive, God-wrought changes occur in us from the moment that we are saved/the moment that we come to saving faith, believe and are justified (declared just) by God. We immediately become "His workmanship" as wholly "new creatures" in Christ, new men & women with a new nature/"new self" .. e.g. 2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 2:10, 4:22-24.

God bless you!!

~Deuteronomy

2 Corinthians 5
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

The Spirit Is made perfect at the moment of salvation and Is sanctified But the body which Is of the flesh Is still sinful and the mind Is part of the flesh and Should be renewed or be In the process of matching the new you that you have become.

Romans12:1-2
KJV

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Sanctification follows salvation. It is justification which accompanies salvation. Your verse is addressed to those who have already been saved.

When you are Born Again your Spirit is sanctified -----your heaven bound ---your sins are forgiven ----your Soul is not sanctified ----your Soul is your Mind --Will and Emotions ------but that does not Stop you from going to heaven ------it is our job by and through the help of the Holy Spirit to mature in our faith by staying in the Word and to mature in our walk with Christ to by obeying the Word so we can get our Soul lined up with our Spirit -------we are to continue to work out our Salvation to the end -----

Once your Spirit is Holy ----- the hard work begins ------changing your thought life from the World to God's way of thinking -----taking control over your emotions ----slow to anger --not to take offense when people criticize us not to feel envy or jealousy towards others etc -------and being obedient to God's Will not your Own Will -----laying down self desires ----self wants ----

Not an easy task ------once your Saved ---your called a Carnal Christian -----your saved but you still live like your in this world -----many people die in their Carnal state -----Maturing to the Spiritual person takes much------ patience -----practice ----practice and more practice and great stamina to stay the course to press on to the goal of developing a Real True Christ like Character all the time -----

I say ----None OF US True Christians will ever reach the end Goal of being a truly Spiritual dependant person ---relying only on the Holy Spirit to direct all aspects of our life -----before we die -----

...Sanctification follows salvation..
True in one sense. But sanctification also occurs prior to that when the Holy Spirit is given to the believer (which is at the point of salvation (or justification). So as soon as a sinner believes on the Lord Jesus Christ and receives the Holy Spirit, he or she becomes "a sanctified one" which is the same as being " a saint". We are not "called to be saints" as shown below in the KJV, but we are "called saints" (as in the Greek). Sanctification* means separation (or being set apart) unto God, which means that saints should behave as saints.

SANCTIFIED BY FAITH IN CHRIST
To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. (Acts 26:18)
Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called [to be] saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: (1 Cor 1:2)

SANCTIFIED BY THE HOLY GHOST
That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. (Rom 15:16)
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Cor 6:11)

*Strong's Concordance
hagiazó: to make holy, consecrate, sanctify
Original Word: ἁγιάζω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: hagiazó
Phonetic Spelling: (hag-ee-ad'-zo)
Definition: to make holy, consecrate, sanctify
Usage: I make holy, treat as holy, set apart as holy, sanctify, hallow, purify.

I say ---I agree that we are alive in Christ ----- Christ who dwells in us makes our Spirit Holy ------

1685960463591.jpeg
Christ who dwells in you is Holy -------as soon as you receive Jesus your Spirit is Holy and if you were to die your Spirit then leaves your body and you are heaven bound -------so your Spirit is Sanctified immediately upon Receiving Jesus in your Heart ------that is my belief ---your soul has to be groomed into Sanctification after your Born Again

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Amplified Bible

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; [a]neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate [by perversion], nor [b]those who participate in homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers [whose words are used as weapons to abuse, insult, humiliate, intimidate, or slander], nor swindlers will inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God.

11 And such were some of you [before you believed]. But you were washed [by the atoning sacrifice of Christ], you were sanctified [set apart for God, and made holy], you were justified [declared free of guilt] in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the [Holy] Spirit of our God [the source of the believer’s new life and changed behavior].

I say -------Your Spirit has to be Sanctified in order to get into heaven -------that is my belief ----all you need is the Holy Spirit dwelling in you and that makes your Spirit Holy-----and you are Heaven bound

Yes. In fact, all believers are FIRST SAVED. Sanctification comes after salvation. It may be near immediately, or it may be later by hours or days.

Salvation is when one recognizes their need for Jesus to come into their lives, repents and asks Him to and, on bended knee with a sincere and contrite heart, asks Him to become Lord of their lives. Receiving Him into their heart/lives, they are baptized by His precious blood, washing them clean of their sins and becoming worthy to be called a child of God.

Sanctification is when one receives the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. This happens when one or more Sanctified believers lays hands on and prays over the new believer. The Apostle Paul made this pretty clear.

Those "saved" are those Paul spoke to when he told them he was feeding them with milk, for they were not yet ready to feast upon the meat of the Word.

The "saved" believer in reading Scripture, has an earthly understanding of Scripture, however, the "sanctified" believer, through the Holy Spirit has a "spiritual understanding" of Scripture. This is a far deeper and more perfect understanding of Gods Word.
