What death is in view in Romans 8:6?

Eternal second death in hell for the unbelieving reprobate?

or a separation of the believer from God as long as he remains in the flesh?

I have always viewed it one way. Then by way of application I could make applications from the text.

Now I am asking you, is this spoken to believers only, or is it to show a contrast between a godly person and the

ungodly person?

Here is the verse: For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. It is speaking about the second death (since all are subject to physical death).

In effect it is saying that a person who claims to be a Christian but lives under the control of his sin nature ("the flesh") is in fact "carnally minded" (controlled by the flesh). Which means that this person is not really saved, and will eventually face the second death or eternal separation from God. So this person must repent and be converted, in order to be "spiritually minded" (controlled by the Holy Spirit). This person will also have eternal life, as well as peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Roman’s 8: 6 is part of a concept that begins here in chaoter 6 regarding baptism and death in Christ

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:1-4, 6-7‬ ‭

to grasp what he’s saying in chaoter 8 we need to begin there in chaoter 6 until around here in chaoter 8 where ouls conclusions are

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:12-13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Just some highlights in between to show it’s a concept bieng explained

“What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:15-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭7:4-6‬ ‭

see it’s leading somewhere as he’s explaining but each verse doent really explain itself it’s only a line of a long we’ll explained concept that toinces his other epistles

Like how he’s saying we can’t serve the flesh anymore or we’ll die

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:16, 19-21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

his last u age flows throughout his epistles oaul is impossible to grasp by single scriptures here and there he’s a revelator explaining deep important concepts

Paul wrote to the Corinthians “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.”

So, he calls them his “brethren”. This is only true if they are in Christ with Paul. But also calls them “carnal”.

He continues: I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal.

He began his letter thus: To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

To end all doubt, Paul called the church in Corinth, people who are “sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints”, carnal.

The warning of carnality in Romans 8 is clear: leave carnality. This is repentance: turning from what was natural and carnal to what is eternal and spiritual. This is the elementary doctrine of “repentance from acts that lead to death” in Hebrews 6.

Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits.

All believers begin carnal. If we are led by the Spirit we will leave carnality behind.

Yes...you get it. The two elders stretched all the way back to Romans 3:18 and went forward to Romans 8:12.
The main thought was that if we are not living upon Christ, what are we substituting in place of Him? Our works, our righteousness?

I agree that all believers are to grow in grace. If growth is not happening progressively a person would have to examine themselves , a spiritual check up.

Now in vs. 6 what death do you think is being spoken of?

brother to do this is a covenant between God almighty and every creature he created , that you are now included in jesus Christ

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;

but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:15-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

In Roman’s six for example oaul has simply written a letter to the church at Rome hes for instance explaining why they were baptized into Christ part of the reason is found here he’s writing to the ones who have believed and been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ but some hadn’t , Paul’s explaining what the significance of baptism is for believers of the gospel

The ones who were baptized would know why and begin toninderersnd e power of Jesus crucifixion applicably ton th en through the act of hearing and believing and acting “ hear the gospel believe and act getting baptized for remission in Christs name

So Paul begins “ those of us who were baptized “ but he’s actually begininning to explain about freedom from sins grasp on man and dominion over man through Christs death burial and resurrection and how the act of baptism ties the faithful believer to it because they heard and believed and acted by that faith offered by Jesus “ believe the gospel and be baptized and you shall( certainly ) be saved “

why get baptized though apostle Paul ?

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.

How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:

that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:1-7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

See he’s speaking about the subject of baptism and what it really means to believers Paul’s role wasnt to write a letter saying “ everyone must get baptized in water for remission “ Pauls role was to reveal to the church what the significance of the doctrine of baptism means to a believer who’s been baptized and the effectual power for the mknd and heart of the believer to free us from sins dominion over us through tempting the flesh

from 6-8 is one of the most important and powerful concepts in all of Paul’s writings because it’s telling us how we are tied to Christs death and resurrection by faith and what it means tonus effectually and tangibly to change our ways without doing it ourselves but through belief

see even when Paul reaches chapter 8
he’s still talking about how to be free from sin and it’s power over us . To have any infuelnce over our actions

“What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:15-18‬ ‭KJV‬‬

then Paul explains this in deep important ways showing how the law of sin within man is working to kill us chaoter 7 and how it works within us and even where it came from ( genesis 3: 6) and how to be set free from e law of sin through what he begins talking about in chapter 6-8 it’s really
Important and you can find the same things but more details in Galatians and other epistles

Yes...you get it. The two elders stretched all the way back to Romans 3:18 and went forward to Romans 8:12.
The main thought was that if we are not living upon Christ, what are we substituting in place of Him? Our works, our righteousness?
He begins here

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:1-4, 6-7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

continuing

“What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace?
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:15-18‬ ‭KJV‬‬

continues

“Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭7:4-6‬ ‭

continues now having explained a lot he begins to make his conclusions about what he’s been explaining from 6 forward

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit…….”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Continues on until he changes the subject to the rejection of Israel in chapter 9 where he begins making new points and things
