I talked to a devout Christian in a hospital about the bible and religion and I brought up the topic I take an interest in studying other religions and he seemed to take it that I was not 100% Christian. My thought on the matter if you are devout there is no worry of another religion 'stealing you away'. Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Early on in my Christian walk, I studied the basic beliefs of other religions or cults. My mindset was that I needed to know what they believed in order to be able to effectively refute it. Apparently, that was not God's mindset because he doubly rebuked me.

First because he told me that these other religions were founded by doctrines of demons, and he did not want me fellowshipping with demons.

Second because he basically told me that I only needed to know what straight was, and not what crooked was. In other words, I only needed to know the truth, and that would be sufficient to refute any error.

As a new Christian you may not be aware of all the perils of doing so. The devil has some 6000 years of history to fine tune his craft of deceit. You have just barely put on Christ. You are not familiar with the wiles of the devil, nor do you yet know how to wield the weapons of faith. So it is probably better to become rooted and grounded in the faith before pursuing knowledge of other religions.

When agents are trained to detect counterfeit bills, they aren't shown the many and various counterfeit bills. Instead, they handle actual currency until they have become so familiar with it they will recognize something counterfeit. The same is true for the Christian. He or she should become so familiar with the truth of scripture that he will recognize when something that isn't true is brought before him.

When I was younger I'd study a cult religion a bit if I needed some background info to help me understand it. I don't see any harm in that and if you're trying to help someone either caught up in the cult or considering the cult, the knowledge can be useful. Fast forward several decades and I don't feel the need to maintain the knowledge I gained on those cults.

Time is best spent in the Word and on your knees, and in sharing the Good News, but some knowledge of what the enemy is up to can be useful for one thing or another.

Knowing what others believe before you counter their arguments is helpful. It is also helpful
to know their core doctrines, historically, because some try to steer clear of them realizing how
bizarre they really are, such as in Mormonism. Knowing what you are up against is pretty important.

So many Christians think they know what others believe, but more often than not misrepresent their beliefs. I find it easier to have discussions with those of different religions when I can accurately represent their beliefs to them.

Being "devout" isn't some magic lock that will prevent you from being swayed or tempted. Look at Peter. He walked with Jesus, personally. Was ready to kill to protect Jesus when they came to arrest him, yet despite being so devout he still swayed during the crucifixion, and denied Jesus.
All it takes is one fear, one doubt, one unanswered question to have an affect on a person's walk and faith.
Feeding those things with other beliefs would only serve to potentially feed into them.
That being said , I think you need to have a long established history of your faith and being sure you don't have doubts of unanswered questions, before even considering looking at other beliefs.
You'll also want to consider what your reasoning is for why you might want to do this.

I take an interest in studying other religions...
Hello Crazyjmill, I will join with most of the rest above by telling you that this is not a good idea, especially for one so young in the faith. Becoming a believer is easy, but the Christian faith, beyond Christianity 101 (IOW, beyond the Gospel message itself) can be quite complicated, so we need to take all the time and energy that we have to give (and all the time that we need) sitting at the Lord's feet, growing in our knowledge and understanding of Him, His word, and the Christian faith (rather than allowing ourselves to become distracted and focused on anything else).

In fact, I believe that the principal (and perhaps even sole) ministry of a Christian during their first several years as a believer is to do just that (to continually grow in the knowledge and understanding of Him/His word/the faith).

God bless you!!

~Deuteronomy
p.s. - I thought that you might enjoy this little story from the Gospel of Luke, as it speaks to this topic (of what the Lord considers to be most important for us).

Luke 10
38 As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.
39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to His message.
40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things.
42 But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good part, and it will not be taken away from her.”

For having read about many of the main religions for many years when I was younger. when I came in contact with a christian bible I had a revelation when I started to read the words of Jesus in John and Matthew, I had found GOD then.

it is not a bad thing to know a bit about some other religions but they are not to be studied in my opinion reading the bible and understand it perfectly will take you a lifetime, I wish someone had steered me on the right track when i was young, I would have saved precious time.

Blessings and welcome.

Brother Crazyjmill As long as you are well grounded in the truth of God's Word, I would say its ok to do. Remember if a teaching does not line up with chapter and verse it is either a cult or false teaching!! Opinions on any subject is just that!! When I teach the Word of God, I always provide chapter and verse!

So that you can decide for yourself!! Many teachers are false out there, and basically tell you if you do not believe as he or she does you are going to hell in a hand cart! The reason it can be good to check out other studies is so you can dig more into God's truth for yourself and help others who can be led astray!! (Jude 1:22-23!) Blessing bro!

I suggest something that others may not, but in my experience this helps.
Start with a plain ol KJ Bible with large enough print to read easily. Read one chapter or so per day in Proverbs until through in the month. That will establish a habit that will get you started on the gospel of John. Pray for God's help understanding it as He wants you to before each reading session.

A good Biblical pastor should be able to teach the foundational doctrines from the Word of God. He is the one who should be able to eventually teach basics about other religions from a Bible perspective. That is very important and something a comparative religious studies professor at a college won't properly do.

To satisfy your curiosity, I will post some short lessons on the major religions here for you. If you don't hear again from me after a few days, don't hesitate to remind me. I've listened to these and approve of this preacher's study as someone who has done so on my own independently.

I wouldn't say you're not 100% Christian if you study other religions; I don't really find it necessary to do so though. In every religion, people have their own personal ideas and beliefs. Knowing the textbook answers to what each religion teaches isn't much help in these cases. I like to simply ask people what they believe about God and listen to their replies. If an opportunity arises to share what I believe I do so. Not a lot of information about other religions required.

Here's a lesson about Ghandi, since he was the most famous Hindu that is loved and quoted by American fake christians as their holy guru they love to quote.

You have to reject not only the fake religions, but also fake christianity.
I'm not saying that you believe the false religion of Hinduism or Buddhism, but most have accepted a false form of salvation that is promoted by works. I did growing up and rejected what I was taught as a Catholic, for example.
Then you believe the gospel to be saved.
Once that decision is made, the Holy Spirit and KJV Bible will be the Guide for all truth concerning spiritual matters.
Mahatma Gandhi was a False Prophet

I was in & out of cults, especially the New Age mov’t. The Mov’t had many aspects, side shoots & over lapping concepts. A lot of those cults were run by charismatic, dogmatic leaders. These leaders were always viewed as right & often were manipulative, despite what they said about finding God or God running things! Or only their spiritual truths were important. But there was over-lap. And not hard to keep track of their heresies. They had some crazy ideas, I mean besides the fact that they were gonna to bring world peace, the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, etc. I once heard a young yogi telling the crowd they had gathered, a story. He finished the story by saying his brother always wanted more money from the crowds, and then he said! “And he was right!” I think he was referring to a previous sentence about God loving everyone. But it came out as “we’re fleecing you!”

I had a very strong revelation of God when he saved me. It took about 6 months to really relinquish my wrong beliefs, even as I started reading the Bible and going to church 3 times a week for services.

Reincarnation was the hardest thing to stop believing in. But God gave me very real reasons why these other cults & even churches were were wrong and far from him, and the truth & the ultimate relationship with the living God.

So I studied and learned the Bible, I memorized texts on how to follow & obey Christ. Before God saved me, I had also read the holy books of the world, in my search for God, but I never found him in the Qu’ran, from Islam; the Bhagavad-Gita from Hinduism; books on Theosophy, which I consider to be dangerous, demonic doctrines, even in my unsaved state. All that astral travel was scary! I had a Buddhist friend who gave me many books on Tibetan Buddhism, but I could never believe an Onotolgy with no God. I also talked with Christian cults, like JWs, Mormons, and other cults. But no sign of God jumping out at me to change my life & mind. Or me convincing them!

I started reading my Bible at night before I was saved, to honour my Christian grandmother. It was a newer Catholic Bible. But very poetic & flowing in nature., it was in modern English which made it a pleasure to read! (No need for a Bible from the 16th century AD where I didn’t understand half the obsolete or changed vocabulary, nor the convoluted grammar.) Which goes to show, you can get saved out of even a Catholic. Besides, the text was translated well from the original languages & God saved me anyway! But don’t read the footnotes, that constantly said the Bible was wrong and the Catholic Church was right.

World religions was mandatory in my seminary, and I took a in person course at a local seminary for transfer credit. The prof was incredible. He was a missionary in Indonesia to Muslims and head hunters, (not like those looking for candidates for a job, but real, primitive tribes who killed their enemies, then cut off their heads & shrunk them down!) Plus he knew about all the other religions, and would often play devil’s advocate in classes, and get us to role play being missionaries to that religion, trying to persuade a random person on the street to hear the message of the gospel. We didn’t usually win that game. Our prof arranged a visit to the oldest mosque in North America, in the north of Edmonton. Prayers were on when we arrived. So we talked to their “welcome committee!) Later, we explored the building, and had a Q & A with the Imam.

But remember, all the students in that class were long time, solid believers. Many were pastors in their own churches or ministries. And they knew the Bible well. But much to our surprise, so did the Iman. He answered all our questions with Bible verses! Apparenty, he got his degree in Egypt in comparative religion. He knew the Bible as well as us. I remember one young man, a pastor went right to the point and asked if they could exchange emails and correspond with him. His church had decided to do outreach to Muslims, and he wanted to know what they believed. So, his prayer was to convert the Imam, then people in their neighbourhood. I never hear what happened.

One basic difference between Islam and Christianity, is that Immanence is all about the God who comes near, in the form of Jesus Christ, who died in the cross for our sins. Emmanuel -“God is with us,” or “God is near.” But the Muslim religion doesn’t believe this. They believe God is only Transcendent. He lives far above us, in heaven, and none of us can ever know him, or even know if we are saved or not!

Our missionary professor asked the professor, “Could God come to earth as a man? “ The Iman was quick to speak!

“He could make himself a man, but he would not!” End of a discussion of the Trinity. Some deep theological truths you need to know about that doctrine, in order to reach them with the gospel.

Get stronger in your own faith, unless you carry some baggage from a former religion and needed learn to counter in your own brain. When you have grown in Christ, go back to your calling. Pray about what God would have you do!

Hi Angela, I have a basic question about bibles. I am currently using for this forum the KJV as many here use this version, I think the old English is a bit difficult for me being born in the province of Quebec, my mother tongue is french language, I find the wording or vocabulary of the KJV is sometimes ancient and the meaning or usage of certain words was sometimes different than today. Could you recommend a version that is more modern but reflects well the original texts? this would help me greatly.

I liked your post, i have had a similar path. I agree with what you said about theosophy, it is demonic and dangerous, it corrupts the mind.

Peace be upon you.
