Prophets always had to have a short term prophecy, and a longer term prophecy. The former, to prove they weren't false prophets.
So If you are able to see that the Olivet discourse, actually involved 2 different locations where Jesus spoke, and had differing messages in vital places, that had a short term prophecy, the destruction of the Temple, and Jerusalem in AD 70. And a far yet FUTURE prophecy, dealing with the end times, and His second return, then maybe you can accept the Jews being in Israel today.
I'll copy and paste a post I made about the Olivet discourse here. I'd encourage you to examine closely the 3 Gospel accounts, and note the difference between Mark & Matthew, which are virtually identical, and Luke, which has important differences than those 2.

Whereas Luke is different in key areas.
Matthew and Marks account take place at night, privately, with just His disciples.
Part of the Luke account takes place in the day, AT THE TEMPLE, in front of the people.
Read all 3 and notice the difference.
So indeed “that generation” did not pass before the destruction of Jerusalem, 38 years, the exact time of the wilderness wanderings.
But the generation In Matthew comes “after these things”.
