But while what he says about allies is true he’s missing the point that the allies have been using this as some sort of “birthright” privilege to have free money and protection from United States, which is what Trump is trying to correct.

Just because you’ve been doing it for 60 years since America gave free money away in the form of the Marshall plan, doesn’t mean that I’ll give you free money today especially when all we hear are lectures from elitists pompous professors who are out of touch with reality and don’t even appreciate but criticize USA for minutia.

It's also shameful that people like @Gideon300 and others who think like him use the memory of their dead country's soldiers as a way to make US feel morally guilty and extort money from them.

When my grandfather was fighting the Nazis in WW2, who was he fighting for? USA?
No! He was fighting for Albania or more precisely his family and his way of life!
Who were the Russians fighting for? USA? No! They were fighting for their land and way of life too!
During the process friends were made and friends were lost. But everyone was fighting for their survival first and then for their national interests.

To say that USA has to protect Albania and give Albania free money now because my grandfather's brother died in WW2 is a shameful and disgusting way of honoring your fallen countrymen and your past family members.

It's also a shame when men twice my age don't know this or refuse to know how history works.

Those who rewrite history think the small countries did the heavy lifting in not only WW2 but every conflict. At least they pretend to believe it. Now they are squealing because they have to figure out how to make it without U.S. money. Lets see how they do when the tariff changes kick in.

Perhaps if you read my posts more fully, you would see that I've criticised Europe for freeloading on the US. America took on the role of "protector of the free world" under the Truman administration, the "Truman Doctrine" as it was known.

This was at least to a degree understandable while Europe recovered from WW2. Britain was effectively bankrupted by war. Germany prospered more than most but refused to rearm. Some of that was because of the great fear of becoming like Nazi Germany once more. Once Europe climbed out of the financial pit, they should have rearmed.

It's easy in hindsight. No one considered Russia a threat once the USSR broke up. The party should have been over in 2014 when Russia first invaded Ukraine. Like Europe in the 1930's, rulers stuck their heads in the sand and refused to face reality. Perhaps it would have been better for America to lay down the law then. Obama did condemn Europe at the time, but obviously was not firm enough.

Australia for one. In every conflict since WW2, including the Vietnam debacle. The UK was in Iraq, twice. Even Ukraine sent some military help to the US military. Many European nations contributed to America's wars. New Zealand and Canada likewise

Other nations include Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Turkey. South Korea and Japan have assisted in some ways also.

Many of these countries suffered military casualties. It's fairly obvious that Mr Trump has a limited grasp on history as well as contempt for the truth.

As an Englishman living in Australia, I suggest that your grasp of history is somewhat limited. While America did a lot of the heavy lifting in WW2, it was Russia who did the most, at least in Europe. If you read accounts of the Pacific war, you would hardly know that Australia was anything more than a base for American troops. This was far from the truth. Australia inflicted the first defeats on the Japanese and prevented them from securing vital bases close to the Australian mainland.

Maybe people twice your age have a more complete picture than you do. I also wonder if Germany had not declared war on America, if America would have left Europe to fight alone. I imagine that the people who could answer that question are no longer with us.

Of course people fight for their country first. It's one of the problems with modern society. The Western world is so perverse that a generation no longer believes our principles are worth fighting for.

I am not sure where you get the idea that smaller nations are trying to extort money from America. I do know that America does exceeding well out of arms sales. That was true in WW2 and it is true now. Unless, of course, Mr Trump's tariffs incite countries to look elsewhere.
