I haven't had earned income since age 46 but have been an investor most of my life and that's how I've provided for my family and for my retirement. So I guess I made my own current job.
It's kind of good you can do that.
People always try to encourage entrepreneurship and business start-ups, but you need a certain amount of capital and take risks to do that. Being your own boss appeals, but there is also the thing of, waiting for 5 years and seeing if you can break even/make a profit, having good and bad years.
If you have superannuation, what happens is you have a lump sum, and it gets paid to you weekly or fornightly so it's like having a steady income just not spending it all at once.
I kind of have to make my own living in a way since, jobs are hard to get and keep now in my country and this economy. A lot of people go overseas, especially to Australia because the job market here in NZ is so dire and the cost of living so high. I just try to keep within my budget, and thankfully there is welfare still (although they call it jobseekers benefit) . Workplaces can be very stressful for me, I think it's also, sometimes not through any fault of your own, but being female, or being a certain ethnicity, or maybe you get burned out because of trying to do too many things, depending on workplace culture.
And being a public servant when govt is cutting back on spending, is kind of hard - your job is not secure anymore. A lot of people just become consultants where they do the same thing, even work for the same department but since they are on the outside they charge for it (often higher than what it would cost if you did it in-house)
