You guys who have androids need to look into rooting, and custom roms like LineageOS. Those will free your phones from all carrier and factory bloat. (Don't try it on a phone you're currently still paying off.)
You can even completely remove google services from an android phone, at the expense of not being able to use a lot of apps.
It will seem complicated at first, but it's how I first got into computers, and the process is made very easy.
There's also completely open-source phones, such as the Pinephone and Librem 5. They're 'libre', meaning they adhere to a universal moral code in tech that they won't put anything in their devices that takes advantage of you as a consumer. Visit fsf.org for more info on that.

Nowadays many banking apps are programmed to detect root access and deny their online services.
There are people out there computing on pre-2013 sandy bridge CPUs with custom hardened kernels and encrypted partitions, living in a permanent state of fear that their data might be exfiltrated.
Our current technology will be obsolete in a matter of months.
I have never installed a traditional GNU/Linux distribution on a phone though.
I vaguely remember things like Ubuntu Touch and Firefox OS, but I guess they didn't gain much traction over time.

Some applications request unnecessary permissions, such as access to your location, contacts, microphone, camera, or messages, even when those permissions are not required for their primary function. To reduce the risk of spying or unauthorized data collection, review the apps installed on your device and uninstall any that you no longer use or do not recognize.
