we were invited to a party & we attended. everyone was told to bring their own plates, napkins, spoons, forks, dishes & cups. & everyone was told to eat only 1 cookie. plus, a bowl was set somewhere for you to donate. i would like to hear everyone's thought on that. i brought 2 expensive pies.

my first thought is - why?

why this set of certain requests?

My thoughts are...what kind of party was this and why wasn't I invited?

I would have brought this set. If it was a cookie time cookie which is quite big, it would fit that plate.

I'm very curious what the cause was or the charity.
Did they do silent auction as well? For the very expensive pies.

This sounds like a setup for one of those ethical trap questions they like so much in philosophy classes.

NO, NOT AT ALL!!!!! the post is totally real, really occurred. it's a party every year hosted by the same people. also, this i didn't mention: the guy of the married couple who hosted the party, always talks about buying antiques but too cheap to pay for anything. there's even more to it: he owns 7 antique cars!!!!!!

Then that transcends weird and wanders into the domain of the surreal.

a reunion type party, lanolin.
oh ok
I've only been to one reunion, was a family reunion and I remember everyone having to bring a plate (of food) because we have a big extended family and no one family is going to cater for every other member.

Kind of like potluck. Churches hold these all the time.

Maybe your millionaire friend didn't have the budget to spend on parties. IDK some people can be stingy with their money, that's how they get to be millionaires.

'Ladies a plate' is a social thing in New Zealand. It's kind of unfair because men don't need to bring anything or bake.

"didn't have the money"? he's a millionaire, remember? just recently, he stopped giving away a $5 ice cream cone for a birthday!!! $5!!!!!!

How do you know he's a millionaire, plus being one doesn't necessarily mean you budget for parties.
Budgets can be for different things. You can't spend everything on some things. Parties may come under disposable or discretionary spending or something like that.

Yes its stingy but having money doesn't mean you can always spend it.

I really don't want to tell you story of how my brothers and sister were trying to get me to pay for 10 peoples yum cha in one bill when it wasn't my idea to have the yum cha it was my sisters.

And they earn so much more than I do. :-(

Life isn't fair and I'm going to tell them so.
