Next time, don't go.
You don't have to say yes to every invite if they going to be like that.

How do you know he's a millionaire, plus being one doesn't necessarily mean you budget for parties.
Budgets can be for different things. You can't spend everything on some things. Parties may come under disposable or discretionary spending or something like that.

Yes its stingy but having money doesn't mean you can always spend it.
lanolin, don't get to involuted with this as many CC members do. & in the process they lose focus on the crux of the post! yes, it's stingy bis all you need. think of it: her's always talking how he doesn't want to spend 5 or $10 on this or that. once, he sent his son to buy an antique from me & even his son realized the offer from the father was cheap & gave me more money for the item. this is no brag but i know all the millionaires around, many of them are my customers. no one else i know is like the guy i'm talking about.

I really don't want to tell you story of how my brothers and sister were trying to get me to pay for 10 peoples yum cha in one bill when it wasn't my idea to have the yum cha it was my sisters.

And they earn so much more than I do. :-(

Life isn't fair and I'm going to tell them so.
see what in mean? i hope you take care of that properly. blessings to you! got to go, lanolin.

thanks Karlon
Sometimes we just have to call it on what it is stingyness or unfairness.

The parable of the steward touches on this.

It used to drive me nuts when people did this! Whenever I hosted a party I would never ask the guests to pay. If they wanted to bring a contribution then all good but their presence would have been fine. People are paying for transportation the the venue, they might be wearing nice clothes and making the effort, but to expect them to bring their own food on top of everything else is to me, rude.

I could write an etiquette book on how to have social events and make sure everyone is having a good time without embarassing anyone.

And Jesus even said if you are holding a party you need to invite the people who can't pay you back because those are the ones who hardly get invited to anything.

well said. we both know there is no paying back when you have been invited to a party. that's like this: imagine everybody calling & saying, "thank you" for a birthday card? it gets monotonous over the top.

Jesus didn't require that anybody bring him gold frankincense or myrrh at his birthday party. And all of those gifts put together couldn't match His gift to mankind.

Maybe next time, you could rightly comment to the host just how much your offering exceeded his.

why do you think my offering exceeded his? i don't think that & never have thought that. there's other issues with this host. in fact, i don't like the guy. the reason we attend the party every year is because big business is involved in many people. it's 1 of those issues where you "go with the flow". or, i can label it this way: the mutual respect & community unity, the names, social & recreational responsibility, the continuance of referrals & suggestions to each other, the high level of gratitude amongst us, etc., constantly feed the future of all of us. it's too long of a relationship with everyone involved. the good news is there's no quarrel amongst anyone never has been.

Yesterday went to a cafe. Actually the cookies cost as much as a pie, it was $6.50 for ONE cookie.
But year 2 pies for one cookie is a good deal.

I've not been to a networking thing in a long time, those things are a rort. What you can expect from business catering, is usually just snack finger food and nothing fancy. I don't know why you'd need to bring knives and forks if you just eating with your fingers.

The last party I went to, was for Matariki (still celebrating Maori New Year) and we had hangi, didn't have to pay or bring anything, the hangi was portioned out into separate tins, and we were given wooden knives and forks and a napkin to eat it with. And a bottle of water.
There was live band entertainment and even spot prizes.

And I have recently learned there is a charity that gives out free cutlery and bowls/plates to borrow, all you need to do is wash them afterwards, so you don't need to buy any, or ask people to bring their own, or buy disposable plates and cutlery, thus saving the environment.

so what everyone ate & drank was controlled?

if the charity was to feed the homeless or of the sort, i can understand. feeding the homeless should never be free, they should work for it. 2nd Thessolonians 3:10!

i appreciate the zero waste effort! ever since i was a kid, i disliked littering.

because i've known the family since the 60's. i know nearly everything abut them. i'll say this; when people around here throw a party ( our friends, that is ), they provide & serve everything. they don't expect anyone to bring anything. & they serve top of the line foods, like filet mignon, crab legs, lobster, shrimp, oysters, mussels, etc. in my opinion, if someone is wealthy & hosts a party & has limitations, that's a low move. & remember, people talk about forever. i once hosted a party where there was only 18 people there & it cost more than $1,000.

oh ok I guess we have to hear about it forever then.

$55 per head for a party of 18 is quite cheap.

Here for a banquet in a restaurant it would be $60-$80 a head, but then that's New Zealand dollars. And yes we have all those top of line foods in Chinese seafood restaurants safe the filet mignon, we'd just have sizzling beef instead.

Lobster/crayfish is upwards of $200 a kilo.

Hangi is not a buffet we all had a portion that included chicken, pork, potato, kumara, cabbage, carrot and stuffing. It was a decent lunch, I ate all mine.
