I guess some people aren't even aware of Rosa Parks. Did they have cars back then...sure, but did the poor people? I don't think so.

I think it might have been her parents generation PLUS she did not grow up where YOU grew up.

Just check it out cos it's been a while since I read it. Supermarkets are not the same as grocery stores. You can't family own a supermarket.

My friend, I read her book. Chicago is where she grew up, on the south side, as did her parents. And there ARE many family owned supermarkets... Woodman's, Festival Foods, Family Foods, Marianos... the last two in... Chicago's south side. These are not 'mom & pop' stores... they are multi-location supermarkets. You are correct, I did not grow up in the south side of Chicago.... I grew up homeless and in poverty, whereas Ms. Obama grew up in a modest working class family, her father a water plant worker and her mother was a secretary, if memory serves me right, until she became a full time homemaker. Ms. Obama did experience the indignities of racial discrimination and that fact contributed to her drive and political outlook. But as I said to an employee who maintained that no white person could understand discrimination, try growing up homeless and in abject poverty, invisible and rejected by EVERY group, always the first to blame for anything that happened... any crime, suspected as a thief because you enter a store to purchase something with the nickels you got from returning bottles, turned away from school for being dirty so often that it made it ALMOST impossible to progress at grade level, denied entry into public libraries because of the way you smelled, turned out of church services for not being appropriately dressed... then come back and tell me I don't understand.

Um what about just going into a store, now matter how much money you have, or don't have...and being racially profiled?

I don't think we can all start comparing how bad we had it with each other, but I have been spat at by a young boy who was white just as I was walking up the road. My (white) neighbours pushed a pram with my brothers in it and the kids would shout derogatory epithets at them and try and bully them just because my brothers are Chinese and apparently there's not meant to be any Chinese people in our poor neighbourhood where everyone in my primary school came from a broken home just about.

I worked in public libraries and we never turned anyone away that I recall but we did have trespass orders on the guy that dropped condoms everywhere.
Homeless peeps would come in all the time cos it was warm.
I worked in the lowest decile school and if someone had no lunch we had emergency lunches as back up
And we DID have parents in jail and children suffered from domestic violence, who would try and do a runner from their own family. Children in foster care. Technically homeless. Children whose achievement was graduating primary school. Children that acted out because they were having family issues. Gangs and tinny houses in our own neigbourhood.

Racial discrimination is not even in the same category as poverty. It cuts across all social classes. Being rich does not really alleviate it.

I agree... and that is a shame on the fabric of our nation. Yet it happens to MANY groups... and is not 'owned' by any singular ethnicity. Horrible, sad and degrading as it is, it should NEVER happen, nor should any so called Christian ever espouse those thoughts and actions... but we humans are imperfect and rely on the love of our savior for forgiveness.
