I've read the Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath a number of times.
I don't know what that says about me...

She was the queen of confessional literature. In one of her journals, she wrote about how satisfying it was to pick her nose. TMI!

More confessional literature, this time it's ME by Elton John

I didn't know he used to do a lot of cocaine. Too much stuff up HIS nose.

Must detox from old-fashioned books by going online and reading social media.

But ReddIT is sooo interesting to doomscroll!

I didn't know the world was going to end October of last year.

Thats why memoirs are so satisfying to read, some people really bare their souls in a memoir.

Lulu wrote she went into rehab

Hasn't everybody been to rehab at some point? If not in this life, possibly the next?

It would be fun to go to a serious insane asylum, or whatever they call them these days 🤪, have some serious treatment for a month or a few and then write about it.

Like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?

Sylvia Plath already wrote about this in the Bell Jar. There was also one called Girl, Interrupted that got made into a movie with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.

Not sure if its really fun to have serious treatment --- like electroshock or ECT as they did (and still do) in those days.

Carrie Fisher also wrote about rehab in Postcards From the Edge and her own memoirs called Wishful Drinking, Shockaholic, and her last confessional the Princess Diarist, in which she confessed she had an affair with her Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford while both were high on weed.

So yea, almost as much fun as working in one, if you read Behind the Gates of Gommorah: A year with the criminally insane. Its by Pyschiatrist Stephen Seager working in the Napa State Hospital, and I remember reading how he wondered if he was insane to take the job (it paid well!) and why...some nurses just called it a 'Jesus Job'.

Britney Spears wrote some of her memoir about how she was locked up in Promises Malibu Treatment Center and didn't think she was insane or as badly addicted as the cocaine and heroin users or alcoholics.

She was on speed/amphetimines.

And of course many celebs have been to Betty Ford. Matthew Perry was a regular rehabber. He had serious addiction problems, both alcohol and painkillers.

Otherwise you join the round of AA or NA meetings, like Elton John did (he was on cocaine)

Confession - I like reading other people's confessions. It makes me feel like a priest. You're all forgiven!! God loves you, warts and all

I think I'm a snob in reverse, since the real snobs snob me. I can sort of snob them back.

But when I found a REAL reverse snob, I found I didn't much like being around her all the time, because she totally hated people who were richer than her and complained to me about them which I couldn't do anything about.

I'm like, some people cannot help being rich and living in a bubble. That's just the way they are. I've been in low-decile schools and high ones. Really everyone is just trying to get by on what they are given. Rich people have their own problems, maybe different ones, but they still have them.

But its kind of funny because she was actually a LOT richer than ordinary kiwis cos she was from the UK and can get a pension, and then come here and get a pension as well, so she has DOUBLE pension. I'm like who are you to talk you rich lady. lol

Amy Winehouse didn't want to go to rehab.

There was actually an entire island dedicated to rehab back in the day in Auckland. It was owned by the Salvation Army, and people took alcoholics there to dry out as alcohol was banned on the island so if someone wanted a drink they'd have to swim to the mainland to get one. They all stayed in some kind of barracks and to pass the time while they couldn't get drunk they did arts and crafts, or made poetry.

The Sally Army also preached to those who couldn't get sober on their own, and quite. a number converted, though not everyone. The ones who made it off the island some stayed sober but others just went back to their drink, and died in car crashes or in the gutter, or the DTs or whatever it is alcoholics die of. I think Amy died of an overdose or she had alcohol poisoning.

Now reading A Very Private School by Charles Spencer

If ever there was an asylum for the criminally insane, it would have been British boarding schools where the bullies and psychopaths are taught.

Sounds like a most gruesome place for sure.

back in the days when they had corporal punishment and thought nothing of beating up children, it just sounded horrendous. Like being in prison but worse because when you're a child you are still growing, and are completely vulnerable. Rich parents would send their children away to boarding schools, basically abandoning them claiming it was for their own good, and while getting an education is important, the methods they used to discipline back then were barbarous.

I mean flogging, whipping on bare buttocks, stapping, rapping on knuckles, caning with a switch... it was just abuse after abuse, and sometimes the children weren't even doing anything WRONG the teachers just enjoyed inflicting pain. It was unneccessarily cruel.
