Ever heard of 'spiritual' depression? Elijah had it, as he sat under the juniper tree and asked to die.
What is spiritual Depression?

'Spiritual Depression goes beyond psychological distress and is often characterized by feelings of emptiness, loss of meaning and purpose, and a sense of disconnection from God'.

Other issues are loss of interest in spiritual activities (prayer, Bible reading). Feelings of guilt and shame, particularly feeling the way you do.
Isolating oneself from other Christians.

Causes.
Traumatic events eg. Spiritual abuse, ministry burn out, overwork in the Church.
Disillusionment with leadership or other Christians,
Unknown causes.

Have you ever experienced this complaint?

What were the causes in your situation?

How did you cope?

What things brought healing?

Job as well as Elijah

Yes, burnout
Doing too much, not eating or sleeping properly
Got help - christian counsellor helped
Being kind to oneself, taking a break..taking one day at a time, letting others take over ministry

We're under attack. That should come as no surprise. Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness (that spirit is not of God i.e. it is one of Satan's). Read the whole of Isaiah chapter 61 (only 11 verses).

Put on "the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness" (Isa. 61:3) and witness the devils of depression flee.

Ecclesiastes 1

18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

I had a bout of spiritual depression many years ago.
It was brought about by a disillusionment in Church leadership. The unethical behavior and abuse really got me down and took me to some weird place within.
How did I cope? Not really well. I had no answers to meet the problem within.
What brought about healing? Time, and lots of it. Prayer when I was able and the word of God.
Psalms 42 & 43 were a great help. The Psalmist speaks to himself, Why are you cast down O my soul? Hope thou in God, was his answer to himself.

The best reason I can think of for us to undergo such suffering, is that we can then help others years later.

Maybe I should make a comment on the difference between spiritual depression as opposed to psychological depression.
Admittedly, at times it is difficult to tell them apart.
Spiritual depression is within that spiritual part of us, the heart, soul/spirit. It has to do with that vertical relationship with God.
Psychological depression is of the mind and emotions. Either caused by neuro-chemical imbalance or adverse external circumstances.

I guess it is possible to have a mixture of both, but usually not.

A good book on Spiritual Depression is by Dr Martyn Lloyd Jones, the famous physician and preacher, 'Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Cure". I highly recommend it.

Psalm 23?
Very helpful when going through the valley of the shadow of death. Sometimes it seems God is out of reach. But no, He's there in good times and the bad. Sometimes our heart can be very heavy and we feel burdened and weighed down. Take your burdens to Jesus.

I do recommend Dr Martyns LLoyd Jones book too.
AW Tozer is another author who's very encouraging and helpful.

The other kind is spiritual OPPRESSION which is sort of like when Satan is buffeting us. We just need to stand firm in His word. Or there's a thorn in our side. That can't be removed or taken from us. What did Paul learn when he experienced this? That God's grace is sufficient.

Didn't Elijah go into a cave and hear the still small voice of God?
Job heard from God but also after that he prayed for his friends. He didn't know that Satan had attacked him for a wager. He stayed righteous though and never lost faith...his problem might have been he was a bit self-righteous.

It has always been my understanding the Job was allowed to be tormented by Satan because Job was deemed righteous by our Father. God made reference to Job as one of His most beloved. He knew Job would come through no matter what Satan put on him. I could be wrong.

yes but also Job was a bit self-righteous and had to be corrected by God.
Basically God (though not angry) had a chat with Job in essence saying who died and made YOU God?
One of Job's friends, Elihu I think it was, pointed this out to him. Job repented in sackcloth and ashes. He was getting a bit prideful of his own righteousness.

Alistair Begg once did a sermon at the Moody Bible Institute yearly meeting, or conference, in 1992 about ministerial depression. I remember him saying that he was surprised by the massive interest in that teaching by the pastors there. It was a packed house. Since then, he did a sermon called "Hanging On When You Feel Like Giving Up".

Other titles of interest here.

I experience depression all the time, sometimes it's more of a 'spiritual burn out' than anything. That's when I strip it down and ease back on the learning and try to contemplate on what I already know. We tend to acquire lots of bit's of information, but sometimes we need the time to process those things and connect the dots. In general, it's that way spiritually with our lives too. Sometimes we need to pull back the reins and slow down.

I went to Mexico on vacation a few times. When I come back, I drive 55 on the highway, and seem a lot more relaxed. I think that here in the U.S., we tend to get caught up in the rat race and don't really see it until we go somewhere where we can breath and slow down. That's my advise for spiritual depression, strip it down, chillax, and if you can, go to Mexico. Bring your Bible.

And remember, we're never supposed to be in a constant state of happiness. Depression can be a sign of a lot of things, but it's also part of life too. High's and lows. Sometimes we over diagnose things.

When I drink coffee, I can work myself up into a rage very easily. I started drinking coffee black, that way I didn't need to make it so strong so that the taste of the coffee could overcome all the sweeteners I used.

I went the Prozac route early in life for about a year. Then Zoloft for about three. I did away with all that, as I don't have any faith in that industry at all these days. Most of my depression comes from a lot of abuse from using depressants, like alcohol, when I was young. there's not much I can do about that. Those meds are no good.

I have had a long history with melancholic depression on and off for years. I could never have survived if not for antidepressants.
Everyone has a different experience I guess.

From the Book of Job, Chapter 42

Now it happened after Yahweh had spoken these words to Job, that Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My anger burns against you and against your two friends because you have not spoken of Me what is right as My servant Job has.

Elihu, not Eliphaz.
Below are several comparative quotes of the same reference from various versions of the Word.

ASV) And it was so, that, after Jehovah had spoken these words unto Job, Jehovah said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.
(Darby) And it came to pass after Jehovah had spoken these words to Job, that Jehovah said to Eliphaz the Temanite, Mine anger is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken rightly of me, like my servant Job.
(ESV) After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite: “My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.
(ESV+) After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz R13the Temanite: “My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.

I have it right now, burned out feeling no one wants to know God or want to listen to him, depressing really is, I asked God to take me as well but don't worry I have zero intention of taking my own, still too much to do . Following Jesus is a hard task .

Christian Scripture presents the spiritual life as involving a struggle against forces opposed to God. Demonic attack may be understood as temptation, deception, fear, accusation, despair, confusion, or attempts to draw a person away from faith and trust in God. The Christian response is not to become obsessed with evil, but to remain grounded in Christ, prayer, truth, faith, and steadfastness.

The New Testament warns that the struggle is not merely against visible human enemies:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

Therefore the believer is called to remain spiritually watchful and to resist evil rather than surrendering to fear. Scripture continues:

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7

The emphasis is therefore not on fearing demons, but on standing firm in God. Prayer, faith, righteousness, truth, and perseverance are presented as the means by which a Christian withstands spiritual opposition. The darkness may be real, but it does not have the final authority; the believer's task is to remain faithful and not allow fear or despair to separate him from God.
