The New Testament was written in Greek, not Aramaic. How do we bypass the Greek? The New Testament was originally written in Greek (except for a few words of Jesus in Aramaic, like "talitha cumi" and "Eloi, Eloi lama sabachthani?"). There were translations into Aramaic, such as the Syriac Pershitta. I found a version of the New Testament in English translated from an Aramaic translation, and it has this for John 20:29:
There is no Aramaic New Testament underlying the Greek that we can “recover.”
So when someone says, “Let’s bypass the Greek and hear Jesus in Aramaic,” they are speaking figuratively, not literally.
What we can do is:
identify Semitic idioms behind the Greek
reconstruct likely Aramaic expressions
compare with early Aramaic translations (like the Peshitta)
listen for the Semitic rhythm inside the Greek syntax
But we cannot replace the Greek text with an Aramaic original, because no such original exists.
