There is evidence of things she claimed, that did NOT happen. Which makes her a false prophet.
We must look at both the historical records of Ellen G. White’s writings and how Seventh-day Adventist theologians and biblical scholars interpret these statements in light of biblical prophetic standards.
Did she make these statements? Yes. Did they come to pass exactly as a literal, surface-level reading would suggest? No.
To determine whether these unfulfilled statements prove she was a false prophet, we must look at the biblical tests of a prophet, specifically the principle of
Conditional Prophecy.
Here is a breakdown of each statement, what happened, and how it is addressed biblically.
1. The 1856 and 1888 Statements (The Imminence of Christ's Return)
The Claim: In 1856, Ellen White had a vision regarding attendees at a conference, stating that some would be "food for worms," some would suffer the seven last plagues, and some would "be alive and remain upon the earth to be translated at the coming of Jesus" (
Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, p. 131). Similar sentiments regarding believers living to see the Second Coming were made around 1888.
Did it come true? No. Every person alive during those years has died.
Does this prove she is a false prophet?Adventist theologians point to the biblical principle of
Conditional Prophecy, as established in
Jeremiah 18:7-10. God states that if He promises to build or bless a nation, but they do evil, He will cancel the blessing. Conversely, if He promises destruction and they repent, He will relent.
- The Biblical Precedent: The most famous example is Jonah. Jonah prophesied, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown" (Jonah 3:4). The 40 days passed, and Nineveh was not destroyed because the people repented. Jonah was not a false prophet; the prophecy was conditional. Similarly, God promised the Israelites they would enter Canaan quickly, but due to their rebellion, that specific generation wandered and died in the wilderness, delaying the promise by 40 years (Numbers 14).
- The Application: Ellen White herself later wrote that the promises of God's immediate return were conditional upon the church doing its job. She stated that if the Adventists in the 19th century had done their work of spreading the gospel, "Christ would have come ere this to our earth" (The Desire of Ages, p. 633). The delay is attributed to the church's failure, not a false prophecy.
2. The 1851 Statement (Old Jerusalem)
The Claim: In 1851, Ellen White wrote:
"I also saw that Old Jerusalem never would be built up; and that Satan was doing his utmost to lead the minds of the children of the Lord into these things now, in the gathering time..." (
Early Writings, p. 75).
Did it come true? If taken as a prophecy about urban development, no. The modern city of Jerusalem has expanded massively, though the ancient "Old City" within the walls has remained largely historically preserved.
Does this prove she is a false prophet? This requires understanding the historical and theological context of 1851.
- The Historical Context: During the 1850s, a popular movement known as the "Age to Come" (Christian Zionism) was sweeping through Protestantism. It taught that before Jesus returned, the literal city of Old Jerusalem would be rebuilt as the spiritual capital of the world, and literal Jews would be gathered there to rule an earthly millennial kingdom.
- The Meaning: Ellen White’s vision was a theological correction. By saying Old Jerusalem would "never be built up," she was declaring that literal Jerusalem would never again be rebuilt as the theological center of God's work or the capital of an earthly kingdom. The New Testament teaches that the Christian church is "spiritual Israel" and the focus is now on the "New Jerusalem" in heaven (Revelation 21), not the Old Jerusalem on earth. Therefore, her prophecy was refuting a false theological movement, not predicting zoning laws and modern construction.
3. The 1895 Statement (Slavery Revived)
The Claim: In 1895, she wrote:
"Slavery will again be revived in the Southern States; for the spirit of slavery still lives." (
Spalding and Magan Collection, p. 21).
Did it come true? Chattel slavery—the legal ownership of human beings as property—was not officially reinstated by constitutional law.
Does this prove she is a false prophet?Historians and theologians argue that this statement was remarkably accurate in its practical application.
- The Historical Reality: Following the Reconstruction era (ending in 1877), the American South aggressively implemented systems that historians literally refer to as "slavery by another name." This included the convict lease system (where Black men were arrested on trivial charges and leased out to plantations and mines as forced labor), sharecropping (which trapped Black families in inescapable debt peonage), and violent Jim Crow laws that stripped Black Americans of their civil liberties.
- The Application: While the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment legally ended chattel slavery, the "spirit of slavery" she identified absolutely revived and dominated the South for the next 70 years, subjugating Black Americans to forced labor, lynchings, and terror in ways that closely mirrored slavery.
Summary: The Biblical Test of a Prophet
Deuteronomy 18:22 states:
"When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken..."
Skeptics use this verse to declare Ellen White a false prophet based on the above statements. However, biblical scholars point out that this verse must be balanced with
Jeremiah 18 and
Jonah 3. If a prophet makes a prediction regarding human events—especially regarding judgments or the timing of God's promises—it involves human free will and is often conditional.
According to Adventist theology, just as the Apostle Paul believed he would be alive when Jesus returned (
"Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up..." -
1 Thessalonians 4:17) and yet he died, Ellen White's expectation of the imminent return of Christ in her lifetime does not make her a false prophet; it reflects the conditional nature of God's timing based on human response.
What I find more significant is her interpreting scripture from a standpoint of obedience to God, as did Elijah, John the Baptist and ALL the other Biblical Prophets. She does not contradict The Word, Jesus as the world Apostate Protestant religions do.
