2Sa 23:1 Now these be the last words of David (David translates from Hebrew as Beloved). David the son of Jesse (Jesse from the Hebrew translates as My Redeemer) said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said,
2Sa 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.

Finging the complete translations of names and places has helped me to understand much over the decades. I pray others will come to this practice also.

I like meaningful names, which is why our children were named Paul and Ruth,
and I am glad my initials are GW because of my love for God's Word.

Wow, there's no much to unpack in those first 4 verses of 2 Samuel 23:1-4! It's never ending!

1 Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said,

2 The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.

3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

4 And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.

Here are other correlating Bible verses in the Bible to help unpack the one being spoke of:
  • Deuteronomy 32:15 — Israel "scorned the Rock of his salvation." The Hebrew word for "salvation" here is Yeshu'ah — a direct linguistic link to the name Jesus.
  • Isaiah 8:14 — the Lord becomes "a stone to stumble and a rock to trip over" to those who reject Him.
  • Isaiah 30:29 — "to the mountain of the LORD, to the Rock of Israel."
  • 1 Corinthians 10:4 — Paul explicitly states: "they drank from a spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ." This is the most direct New Testament declaration.
  • Romans 9:33 / 1 Peter 2:8 — both quote Isaiah 8:14, applying the "stone of stumbling" to Jesus.
  • 1 Peter 2:6 — quotes Isaiah 28:16: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of testing, a cornerstone of great value, and he who believes will not be put to shame."
  • Hosea 6:3 — "Let us know the LORD; his coming is as sure as the sunrise."
  • Malachi 4:2 — "For you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays."
  • Isaiah 60:1–3 — "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you."
  • Numbers 24:17 — Balaam's oracle: "A star will rise from Jacob; a scepter will rise from Israel."
  • Revelation 22:16 — Jesus declares: "I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star." This is the most direct fulfillment of the "light of morning" image.
  • Luke 1:78 — Zechariah's song: "Because of the tender mercy of our God, whose Sunrise from on high will visit us to shine on those sitting in darkness."
  • Matthew 4:16 — "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those sitting in the region and shadow of death, light has dawned."
  • John 1:9 — "The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world."
  • John 8:12 / 9:5 — "I am the light of the world."
  • 2 Peter 1:19 — "We have the prophetic word made more certain, doing well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts."

Love the study on the names of God.
