It all began when a little boy,
Made prayers about a favorite toy.
And made a plea for a sunny day,
“Please just keep the rain away.”
Blessings were asked for Daddy and Mommy,
And maybe a little one for brother Tommy.
And it always ended just before sleep,
Praying the Lord his soul to keep.
Yet time slipped past and that great old thief,
Came and stole the child’s belief.
His prayers soon rang the church house bells,
And rose to the arches where the angels dwell.
God’s name was called in power and might,
Assured by faith as prayers took flight.
God’s book was known from front to back,
Quotes and words were all on track.
A minister stood near to nod his head,
Approving and smiling at all what was said.
Yet time slipped past and that great old thief,
Came and stole the child’s belief.
And now it has all just passed away,
Oh, how slowly it slipped astray.
The prayers changed too, as boldness fled,
While life beat ceaseless on an old grey head.
Prayers alone, in silence shed,
In tears and heartache from a bed.
Only a groan to pay the toll,
For the transit of a worn-out soul.
Yet God stepped in on the hours of grief,
And gave him back his child’s belief.
Toys and sun and family dear,
For a prayerful soul the Lord kept near.
