The people at churches always say that using swear words is a sin, but it doesn't make sense. Swear words do refer to crude things, but there's other words that mean the same basic things as swear words but Christians still use them.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
( Ephesians 4:29 )

Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
( James 3:9-12 )

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
( 1 Peter 3:10-11 )

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
( Luke 6:45 )

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
( Romans 7:22-23 )

'swear words a s a concept are flawed. They are rather arbitrarily chosen and vary in offensiveness based on location. Personally I don;t care one way or another with swear words. If I know someone around me would offended by them, then I don't use them simple as that.

Any word can be a swear word.
It's the INTENT that matters.

Having said that, IF using such a word has the potential to cause another to stumble, don't use it around that person unless you explain to them first, "ok, i'm going to use a word, but just for illustration purposes"

One of the reasons little children embarrass their parents in restaurants by saying "poop".
Because these ideas have become "unsavory" somehow instead of just referring to a natural phenomenon. It's how you use them and how they are received.

Swear words are also called "curse words". They are the worlds language currency as seen in Hollywood movies, music, and funneled down to school buses. These words are not kingdom words designed to praise and worship the Lord. It is good to close yourself off filth and wickedness whenever possible.

Jesus said:
Mark 7:20
20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

therefore swearing defiles you. You know it is wrong yet we say it.
Let's not copy what the pagans and unbelievers do, as they do things to anger Lord Jesus.

I don't think caring would be a bad thing. Anytime we can lessen our on-the-fenceness it is a good thing. I tend to think the Holy Spirit isn't too keen on them...and He's around always!

Just remembered this. This also might be of interest.
The Father Himself uses some language that today would be considered unsavory, when speaking of His own Son. (newer translations have "watered this down" <pun intended)
Who knows if these words were considered vulgar in those days... but the bodily functions depicted sure were.

In 1 Kings 14, some of this language is used to describe what Y'Shua would do to the errant religious leaders, and how they would regard Him.

Not promoting the intent of profanity, just giving example.

God is holy. Nothing in our world is holy like God is. We may not use this name in any way that does not honor the holiness of God.

Here is something that actually happened. It was on a construction site, they were adding onto a paper mill. There were an unusual amount of accidents happening, and there was also an unusual amount of swearing going on, often asking God to damn what they were doing. The man in charge of the construction called a meeting, and asked that the workers stop this. I don’t think anyone knows how much the cursing was stopped, but there were no more accidents until the project was finished.

'But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. ' [NIV]
Colossians 3:8

Strong's Concordance 'vile conversation: - filthy communication.'

Thayer's Greek Definitions 'foul speaking, low and obscene speech'

And why don't we swear:

A) Because God said don't.
B) The results and consequences as quoted from scripture by member Timothy10
C) Matthew 5:13-16 & 1 Peter 1:15-16 (What we do should glorify God by the change and we are called to be Holy, that is to be set apart from the world. An active conscience decision to stop swearing by the power of the Holy Spirit is certainly a good start!)

Hi, sel, I pray all is well for you and your cats all swaddled in a blanket right now, I hope, your comforters from God :)

@swearing, about it, swearing allows Satan to attack us, milady, as, when we get angry and we swear we are then allowing an inroads into our life of The Devil and that is not good, as , Ephesians 4:26 reads, and,the Devil's allowance speaks quickly, simply true is 4:27. :)

But God is good Sel, and, His power trumped evil's long ago, on the cross, and even before, when in Revelation speaks of Lucipher, a good angel, one of God's most esteemed, took on a renouncing pride that led to Lucipher's banishment from Heaven (Rev. 12:5-9).

So swearing leads to Satan's entrance, sel, and, here is scripture that tells true that Jesus on Earth, spoke of swearing and to 'not swear at all.'

'Again you have heard it was said to those of old, ' you shall not swear falsely but shall perform your oath to the Lord. But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool....' (Matthew 5:33-34)

Now, go wrastle with them cats of yours, young lady, and, OH, watch out for dem teeth and claws :)

Ok people love to get cutesy and say there is technically no such thing as a swear word, because words are just words and bla bla bla...

I know people who say such absurdities don't believe it..

Cuz if they had a kid, they would make sure their lil one-year-old wouldn't be caught saying such words.

Exactly. And it goes so far beyond swearing but we have to take it one battle at a time.

I contend that swear words are not arbitrary at all. If we acknowledge them to be not of God, then they obviously are of the devil. Thinking on this then...he has been very strategic and purposeful with all that he has done.

Make two columns. In the first, list any swear words you can think of. In the second column, consider the gift or beauty of God's creation that the swear word seeks to defile. If we do this it should open our eyes. This subtle "mad-made" language, which is sin-currency in the world, attacks something God created...that sounds like satan's pejorative work to me.

A pejorative is, in essence, when a culture takes a word with positive connotations and morphs it over time into having negative connotations, and sometimes even denoting a new meaning. I like to use "gay" to teach students as the word was not linked to homosexuality until first in 1935, and then more widespread in the 50s. Now in 2012, people use "gay" to mean "lame". It changed value.

There's the garden and the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and the value of that tree is death. We know that is the value because God placed that value on it. Then the devil came and through Eve twisted the value to mean "knowing" and "being like God". First pejorative ever. Of course, it still meant death. We are all so stupid.

Excellent post !

But why are swear words a sin, sel ? Because God says not to do them, they are not written law, but, by virtue of coming from God's mouth to 'not swear at all,' as I put in my earlier post, swear words are certainly to be not said, and, that milady, is definitely unwritten law :)

However, there can be times where God has you do things to reach others, and, God is who we are to follow, it is a PERSONAL relationship with Him we should most seek, right :) And, IF you are in the down and out section of beverly hills witnessing and you are all clean cut and cool looking and the others are wearing swastikas and even have SWEAR WORDS tatooed on their elbows and are rough, rough street-wise folk, then, to reach them, God may use something EXTREME , even swearing. THAT is a case by case basis, and, the Lord will make it RIGHT FEELING in your heart, sel. Otherwise, try not to do it and , as a guy, when a girl takes the Lord's name in vain by saying 'Oh my God, or ' OMG,' that's a sign, a GREAT SIGN that she's got to work through some issues with God. So..., now, go huggy dem catz :)
