Well, God is amazing, Walter :). He loved you so much that He allowed Jesus to come to Earth to die for you; and JESUS loved you enough to die for you before you were even born :). "He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world", as part as Ephesians says :). John 3:16-17 says (NKJV) "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." He adores you, Walter, and wants you to meet Him as soon as you're ready :). Just tell Jesus that you know that you're a sinner, and that you accept Him as your Savior. Ask Him to forgive you, and to make you a new creation in Him :).

Atheists have no joy or hope. Even if all things were equal between christians and atheists thats the one draw back of atheism. If you invite Jesus in he will come into your life. Just ask in prayer. Thats' where this starts.

Lord that you for the hope that his friend had placed in him...
may it grow into a unshakeable faith, full of your fruit and glory!
In Jesus Name, Amen

I would start with reading Book of John.( In the Bible)
