    Catholicism vs Protestantism

no, that's not what I meant. I was asking if when you use the phrase Christian tradition, do you mean just what is in the Bible? if so, you may wish to be aware that that is not how most people use that phrase. :)

I think what I was talking about there was the idea that if a person looks at a passage regarding slavery in the Bible and decides to interpret it loosely, doesn't it make sense then to interpret the entire Bible loosely? I think it's actually a good idea to interpret those parts of the...

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

oh yes, all requirements in the Bible are significant! at the same time, is it a good idea to read some parts of the Bible very carefully and closely, and other parts very freely and openly? imo, that approach would allow the reader to make the Bible say whatever they wish. The situation...

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

great question! I don't think the Bible says. it's fine to use tradition, imo. it can be ancient tradition, like the council of Carthage, or modern tradition like, "this is the Bible my church uses". or, if not tradition, personal revelation like, "God told me to use this Bible".

but just like with slavery, though, don't we use a nice, open interpretation of the entire Bible?

Do you mean there is no Christian tradition outside of the Bible?

well, that's one way to interpret what I wrote. I think I said something like, let the reader decide...

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

yes, I think that's a good way to interpret those passages, looking at the general ideas being presented. probably then a good idea to use that same approach to the entire Bible. Differing weights and differing measures-- the LORD detests them both. https://biblehub.com/proverbs/20-10.htm 2...

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

I understand what you're saying. at the same time, why not do both? then all the bases are covered. what I was getting at was that if a person is going to follow the Bible pattern as carefully as possible, then I think they would want to baptize in a river or stream.

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

if a person uses both scripture and tradition, then it looks to me like it's not "scripture only".

lot of time is spent talking about water baptism. Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

I certainly wouldn't dispute that, especially since the Bible contains verses like this one Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. https://biblehub.com/proverbs/3-6.htm but I think it's interesting that Bible passages on subjects like slavery, which the Bible...

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

I have done that in the past. if I remember right, in every instance where a location for the baptism is given, the baptism is done outdoors and in running (or "living") water, like a river or a stream. the people that you fellowship with on Sunday, do they baptize that way?

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

Well, do you use scripture and tradition, then?

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

I think some of the misunderstandings come from "in the name of..." in English, we sometimes say "stop in the name of the law". we are not thinking of a particular name in that case, nor do we think something important happens when we make the sound "law" with our mouths. so given that, why...

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

seems like it could lead to some interesting situations. suppose: a Jewish person born in about 20 BC living in Asia Minor. they worship the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob, the true God. Jesus is born, dies, and comes back to life again, but this person never hears about it. they never...

does Jesus say that humans will be judged by the Bible? or does he say that humans will be judged by his words?

have you read the early church fathers? that would be an example of early Christian tradition. I haven't researched it myself, but I've heard that the idea of baptizing babies is found in the early church fathers. is that a tradition that you or the people you worship with on Sunday morning...

well, okay, but Christian tradition is basically Catholicism or Eastern orthodoxy.

    Catholicism vs Protestantism

no, my point is that people who say they use scripture only almost always use tradition to say what is scripture and what is not.
