That's not what the passage says. It says by the will or actions of God. If you have a debt and I pay it off, did you do anything to receive the benefit of my actions. No. And so it is with God in salvation.

As I read it, this is done independently of the input from man.

The Bible never says we accept Christ, but that we receive Him. In the same passage it says this is done by the will of God and not the will of man...John 1: 12-13.

To be quickened has a number of meanings, and can mean as you suggest. But in the context of Ephesians 2:1, it seems to suggest the impartation of life. From the verse, those who were quickened were formerly dead in their trespasses and sins.

The type of love doesn't change the reason for loving. Either one is loving as a result of their own choice or they are not. In other words, agape love and filial love can be expressed unconditionally.

They don't belong to me; they belong to God. I have been blessed with the responsibility of their care. Hence, I have opportunity to share expressions of love more frequently and more intimately with them. But this doesn't change the nature of the love.

My choice to love them comes completely from within myself. It has nothing to do with what is true of them. Just as God has mercy on whom He has mercy, my decision to love my children is simply based on decision to set my affections upon them. Should this be the way we extend love to all people...
