I do believe that professing Catholics can be saved, and that "professing" protestants can be lost... however, in a church like the RCC where the gospel is obfuscated by works, legalism, and all manner of ritual... it seems like a bit of an uphill swim for them to find a clear rendition of the gospel to believe in.

We believe that God's grace is the primary element behind salvation, but it is made useful or useless via our reactions to it. For example, Israel in the desert received numerous graces, none of which benefited them because of their stiff-necked qualities. Simply experiencing God's grace is not sufficient for salvational merit. We must react to that grace positively. This is not a works-based salvation, this is common sense.

1 Thessalonaisns 1:10 Paul the Apostle: "Your faith brought joy to those around you. You labored in love and reaped its fruits."

We Catholics place an emphasis on good works because we faith and good works as being interconnected, and not once have we claimed that good works trumps faith, because faith produces good works to begin with.

Rituals were assigned to Israel by God throughout biblical history, including animal sacrifices and meals of thanksgiving. Christ himself honored the Jewish customs.
