I've been looking for that online, unsuccessfully. I suppose you mean in his History of the Church. Do you know in which book? Thanks.

If I remember correctly, it is in the Ecclesiastical History, chapter 23.

Thank you, @rewriter. Hegesippus doesn’t use the word archiereus (the title of the High Priest in the Greek NT) but he clearly states, “He alone was allowed to enter into the sanctuary” (in the Loeb translation, first link below), which amounts to the same thing.

It’s a pity that Paul Maier doesn’t say anything about it in his commentary on this chapter, which I find all too brief (second link).

My personal inclination is to shrug it off, on the assumption that, in this one sentence, either Eusebius is misquoting Hegesippus or else that Hegesippus is confusing James’ position as the recognized head of the Jerusalem Christians with the Sadducee high priesthood .

However, I will continue looking. It would be reassuring to find some recognized authority on the history of the early Church who agrees with me on this point. Whatever turns up, I’ll get back to you on this thread.
