Hi everyone,

I have been thinking about this for a few weeks... what does everyone think, as a Christian, of the concept of love at first sight, or an instant connection with someone? I'm not so sure about love at first sight, chat, or conversation... I do know I've felt almost instantaneous connection with people at times (whether as friends or as a possible romantic interest) and I know that Paul speaks about kindred spirits in the New Testament... But, I also always keep in mind Jeremiah 17:9 (the heart is deceitful above all things) and know that we can't just go on feelings alone, no matter how strong or real they may seem.

It has also been my experience that I have sometimes bonded with someone very quickly for the wrong reasons (for example, we were going through the same kinds of struggles but God was trying to push me past that point and the other person was not willing to go any further... so, I chose to wrongly hold on, and hanging on to that person held me back as well.)

What has been your experience, and what do you think?

i personally do not belive in love at first sight...
connection straight away - perhaphs but definitly not love at first sight
there is not such a think imo.
i mean love in the bible is:

1 corinthians 13

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8Love never fails

that dosent just happen as soon as you see someone

Even if you don't believe in love at first sight, what about an instant bond with someone who might be a potential friend? How did the friendship turn out, if you've experienced this?

I fell in love with my cat at first sight - not really, I resisted paying money for him

now he politely demands back rubs

I think animals can accounted for. ;) I have some friends who just got a new kitten because she was the only one of the litter who came up and thoroughly checked them out--they said that they'd told themselves they'd go home with whichever one introduced herself to them first... that's probably how I'd pick out a cat as well if I were going to get one... let the little furball pick me instead of the other way around.

Now if only I could find that application when it comes to dating... :) It's all good, God is working some things out in my life!

As far as an instant bond, I'm talking about meeting someone and feeling as if you've known them for a long time and/or seem to agree in your way of thinking, philosophies, experiences, etc... whether as a potential significant other or as a friend (I've experienced both and sometimes it went well... and sometimes not very well at all!!)

Even with potential friends... I've found out later that the real reason I bonded with someone is because we were both pretty much desperate to have someone to lean on and as we grew as individuals... it would usually lead to one growing ahead of the other or in different directions and resulted in a lot of hurt feelings when the friendship grew apart or ended altogether.

How about all of you?

yeah i belive in an instant bond - definalty! (however you spell it!:))
i belive in both of the above - ie

1)for a potential significant other
2)for a potential friend

i have found an instant bond with plenty people - i do understand what you are saying about hurt feelings. I reallly do - unfortuantly, it has happened many times aswell.
But - thats life , you know.
So to sum up what i am saying

-Love at first sight
no

-instant bonds
definitly

Yesss, I agree with u guys.
Cuz I don't think "sight" is enough to love a person. After all, were supposed to love a person for who they are not what we see on the outside.
Yeahh. I have most definately experienced instant bonds many times though.
