Keep reading through verse 8 to get to the balance that both singleness and marriage are gifts from God. And contentment is largely a matter of focusing on the advantages rather than the lack in your situation.

The motif of 1 Cor 7 is keeping the (marital) status quo. You're born again married, stay married and do not seek separation; you're born again single, stay single and do not seek a spouse, for life is short, time is fleeting, set your mind on things of God, not worldly distractions.
In other words. Be happy in the state you are in.

I've concluded this obsession with marriage, relationship and sexuality as the outcome of "relational prosperity gospel", a variant, opular of prosperity gospel, that God will reward your faith and devotion with godly relationship, partner, kids, family and the most amazing, magnificent sex, it has gone so far to such a level that a happy, stable and prosperous marriage has become the proof and the purpose of Christian faith, that if a couple has their happily ever after, they must be good Christians; and if you sign up and get baptized, you must be pursuing your happily ever after. Well I don't wanna sound cynical like a sour grape, but this is a huge disservice.
And as one book I read pointed out, if you do get your christian fairy tale ending and marry the person you're going to live happily ever after with in wedded bliss, what are you actually going to do? Food still needs cooking, poopy diapers still need changing, taxes still have to be paid, etc. Even happily ever after has its not so great parts. Can't just ride off into the sunset forever.
I agree that people both idolize and idealize marriage far too much. But I don't think it's wrong to want something like that either. In the meantime, as I pray and wait on the Lord, my job is to be faithful in what He has given me. And even if I never marry, I know that the Lord will sustain me in it.
