I have been dealing with this issue for quite a bit and want to figure out the best way to cope with it. I will try to keep it as short as possible. I hope someone can give me some advice on what to do about it.

I am 24 years old and will be 25 this August. It has come to my attention through the competition showcase that is Facebook that most of the people who I have known throughout childhood are married, engaged, or seeing someone. I have never had a relationship before. People are surprised when I tell them that--but it is the truth. And it is starting to bother me. I am worried that time is running out and that I will never find someone, but another issue comes into play which leads me to seeking help on what to do about it.

When I was a child, I had a hunch that I should be single for the Lord's purposes and that the career I would have would require it. For example, I wanted to help the homeless and be a missionary, and those jobs usually demand lots of time and attention that would be difficult to juggle with a family. I also never enjoyed the idea of giving birth to my own children. When I was a child I never really liked to play with baby dolls and pretend to be "Mommy" or play "House" with other children. And the idea of giving birth irked me. When I was eighteen my mother actually said to me "I don't see you having children". I don't hate children though... I mean, I used to be great with kids (ages five and up, btw lol). When I was a teenager I actually used to play with kids in my neighborhood who were younger than me and I took them off their parents' hands for a bit. One kid would even knock on my window begging me to come outside and play lol.

But ever since I turned 21, after my mom passed away from cancer, I started to desire a human partner to go through life with me. I wanted a husband. I wanted to share my world with someone. But this is the kicker; I still don't want to have children. And I know that having children is a big part of marraige, that is just how it is. But my reasons for not desiring children may or may not be selfish. One of the big reasons why I do not wish to have children is simply that I do not feel adequete to take care of another human life--because it is a HUGE responsibility. I don't want them to grow up with someone like me. They would be screwed. Simply screwed. And I just do not want to give birth. Plus I don't want them to inherit any of my health issues or mental disorders (OCD is HUGELY genetic).

In spite of all of this, I still feel in the back of my heart that I could find somebody. I write letters to my "future" guy and pray for him sometimes. I daydream of what he will be like, and the things we will do. I go to bed at night holding my blanket pretending it's a person and I wake up doing the same. The problem is, I'm not guaranteed that this "guy" will ever be a part of my life. If God really wants me to be celibate, I want to be celibate. I just have no way of knowing for sure what He wants me to do. I want to follow the path He has laid out for me, and I do not want to veer off the path by dating or getting married when all along He wanted me to remain as I am. I want to obey Him because I know I will live my best life in submission to His will. But my desires to have someone have been so strong lately, it scares me. I feel saddened when I think on the fact I may not ever find someone. I pray and ask God to put my eyes on Him alone and it helps, but I always go back to the same crap.

I have been noticing that I am jealous and hurt when I see other people enjoying a relationship. I get angry and sad when I see couples together in public so I project my loneliness and despondency on them. It sucks and I have no clue how to fix it. I have prayed for help and I have asked God to help me get my mind right. I just feel so impatient because I am getting older and time feels like it is going by so fast--I don't want to miss out on anything. But at the same time I am conflicted in not knowing whether or not I should be celibate for life. I'm so scared the type of guys I want will all be taken by the time they are 30. I'm scared of going through major life events physically alone, I want someone to experience them with.

So, I guess my question is--what should I do to combat these intense emotions and fears of mine? How do I reconcile them with God's truth? What would be the best way to handle this? I don't want this to bother me anymore--I just want to be happy and stop worrying about being single or being married and all of that crap. I just want to live God's path for me. But my mind is stuck on stupid. Is this a phase that 25 year olds experience or is it gonna get worse as I get older???

HI there. Welcome to CC. Honestly the only advice I can give is stay prayed up and ask God to give you grace to accept whatever he has for your life.

Step one, don't make any decisions for a while. Take your time making a decision. Otherwise it's too easy to be swayed by emotions.

Marriage and children "often" go hand in hand, but not always. I know a woman that marries twice to men that didn't want children. She didn't want them either. In fact it seems more common for women to not want kids than men.

Even those not called to be celibate/single aren't guaranteed anyone. I am definitely not called to be either, yet I'm 42, never married and already lost the one I wanted to marry.

Relationships are a hassle. Don't go looking for anything. If someone comes along, go slow. If not, it's probably easier that way anyways. Better alone than heartbroken.

Hi Jess! Welcome to CC :).

I'm guessing that every single who has ever wanted to get married has gone through what you're going through. And of course in your case, the OCD isn't helping anything, is it? But OCD or no, we all obsess at times, and I know I've had my fair share of intense desire for a life partner, and tearing myself apart over finding one. My very best childhood friend--a girl who I played with and grew up with almost like a sister--is getting married this fall, so I know how tough that can be, too.

As for the kids...I'd say you're kind of putting the cart in front of the horse :). If you're meant to be with someone, maybe they won't want kids, or maybe you'll be unable to have them together. Regardless, you don't have to deal with that now. And of course you're not adequate to take care of another human life! God hasn't given you that strength yet. Again, if and when that time comes, God will take care of it all.

Enjoy your time as a single. Use it to deepen your relationship with God and search out the paths you feel called into. Don't worry about finding a marriage partner (I know...who am I to talk? I do that all the time! :p) and try to be content with what God has given you. You can't screw up his plan for you. Either he'll bring someone into your life and you'll get married and you're not supposed to be celibate, or he won't and you are lol. I have also felt torn about a possible calling where marriage doesn't seem to be an option. Since at this point marriage isn't on the horizon, I am moving ahead on that. If God brings a possible marriage partner into my life, that will be time enough to regroup. I can't wait around wasting my God-given life waiting for a (possibly hypothetical) Prince Charming.

"I just want to be happy and stop worrying about being single or being married and all of that crap." So, so true! I wish I could do this as well :(. In this instance, I really can't say I have advice for you, because I struggle with the same thing. As always with worries, throw them on God. And when they come creeping back into your heart, give them to Him AGAIN...and again. I have been reading a little devotional by Lydia Brownback called "Trust: a godly Woman's adornment" I highly recommend it, it has helped me a lot with contentment and trust.

Anyways...I guess I don't have much for helpful advice, but I just want to let you know that I understand! And I'll be praying for you :)

Hello pinkjess,

Eyes on Jesus! Stay with Him. Trust me, you only want a spouse if He gives you one!! Marriage is A LOT of work and sacrifice, with some good times every now and then. No need to get anxious and end up with Mr. Trouble - you need to find Mr. Right. LOL!

Two books I recommend: 1) 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman and 2) 4 Seasons of Marriage by Gary Chapman.

Wish you the best! :)

I know how you feel I'm already 25 and so I get the whole "mind stuck on stupid" deal I want to serve God as well to the best of my abilities but I can't stop thinking about being in a "serious relationship" with someone only difference being "I think I've found someone" that my soul knits with but since you haven't perhaps try going to a church you like.
It really helps to have a place to "clear your mind" or even a place to "cry" without shame, and also try to maybe "stay busy" for me my schedule is pretty much work twice a week, when not working get on Christian Chat to talk to people or better yet "help people",do chores, pay bills, watch tv,play games, read the bible or use it for answering questions when needed,go to church,(I visit multiple churches since I can't get to my family church )take care of hygiene, listen to family talk endlessly in rants or discussion.(wears me out physically and mentally the most though doesn't help me more of hurts me)
I suppose just try to seek a "main purpose" or "main goal" and just consider the possibility as "secondary" in meeting someone to be in a relationship with.

Hi Pink, do not be anxious about anything - everything will just fall in place at the right time. But there's this almost bizarre truth in the bible:

1 Tim 2:14And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman who was deceived and fell into transgression. 15Women, however, will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

Just wanted to put your verse into context, it’s talking about how Adam and Eve fell.
It in no way suggests that only woman who have children can be saved! This version
puts it better, in that through child bearing Christ would eventually be born, it’s
Christ who we all saved by, as long as we are born again ourselves.

1 Timothy 2:13-15 AMPC
[13] For Adam was first formed, then Eve; [14] And it was not Adam
who was deceived, but the woman who was deceived and deluded and
fell into transgression. [15] Nevertheless the sentence put upon women
of pain in motherhood does not hinder their souls' salvation, and they will
be saved eternally if they continue in faith and love and holiness with
self-control, saved indeed through the Childbearing or by the birth of the
divine Child.

I longed to be married and have a relationship for many years. I decided to follow God's leading and wait on Him. I know it's hard to watch your friends in relationships and getting married. He who finds a wife finds a good thing. It's best not to go looking and allow God to send that man to you. This doesn't mean to not keep your eyes open but don't force anything. Have you considered finding a church with a young adult ministry? I heard a story about a woman praying for her husband as a teenager. She was in another country and he was in the United States. She did not know the man she was praying for but the man that she married was the one that God sent to her. He was everything and more that she had prayed for as a teenager. I too used to pray for the kind of man I wanted to marry. God will give us the desires of our hearts as long as they line up with his word. Maybe surround yourself with other young adults who's focus is on God. If you keep your focus on Him it will help you be less focused on a relationship and kids. As you, I also didn't want kids. Today I am married to a man who also did not want kids and we don't have kids. He too is everything and more that I prayed for. As you continue to pray God will show you the way. Don't be afraid. There are plenty of men in the earth. You only need one. Have you thought about getting counseling for the OCD? I pray for God to speak to you clearly and you will know the way to go and He will resolve your emotions of jealousy and hurt.

As far as you not wanting children is concerned...dont make any decisions until you meet "the guy". Reason being the man God has for you may change your mind on so many things and that is not necessarily a bad thing :)
