Daniel 9:24-27 speaks of events that are to take place within 70 weeks. I will now place the events of this passage in a historical context, accepting the common interpretation of exegetes that one day here corresponds to one year.

Exegesis of Daniel 9:24-27

24 Seventy weeks have been determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Holy of Holies. 25 So you are to know and have insight that from the going out of a word to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be restored and rebuilt, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.
Since one day here corresponds to one year, 70 weeks are 490 years. The decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem refers to that of Artaxerxes I in 458 BCE (Ezr 7). From 458 BCE, 483 years (7 weeks and 62 weeks) into the future, we end up in the year 26 CE. In 26 CE, Jesus Christ, who is the Messiah, was baptized and thus began his ministry.

26 Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing.
It says that the Messiah will be "cut off" and "have nothing" after 62 weeks. Since the first 7 weeks (49 years) are considered to have passed, the counting now begins from 409 BCE instead of 458 BCE. In 409 BCE, the completion of the "Restoration of Jerusalem" may have taken place. From 409 BCE, we thus go 434 years (62 weeks) into the future and arrive again in 26 CE, the year Jesus was baptized. "Cut off" means that Israel will reject the Messiah. Shortly after Jesus began his ministry, the Jews tried to throw him off a hill to kill him (Lk 4:28-30). "Have nothing" means that the Messiah's own family will abandon him and that he will be poor. Jesus' family distanced themselves from him (Matt 13:57), and he was homeless (Matt 8:20).

26 And the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are decreed. 27 And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will make sacrifice and grain offering cease; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.
The prince in verse 26 is the Roman commander Titus, who with his Roman soldiers destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 CE. The first half of verse 27 refers to Jesus the Messiah who made a new covenant with many (Matt 26:28). That Jesus will end the Temple service in the middle of the 70th week refers to his crucifixion, which ended the old covenant (Mk 15:38). Half of a year week is 42 months. Jesus began his ministry in late 26 CE and was crucified after 42 months (2 leap months) on Nisan 14, 30 CE. The second half of verse 27, however, again refers to Titus the destroyer of Jerusalem.

Summary

  • 458 BCE - Decree to rebuild Jerusalem and start of the 70 weeks
  • 409 BCE - End of the first 7 weeks
  • 26 CE - Jesus, the Messiah, begins his ministry at the beginning of the 70th week
  • 30 CE - Jesus is crucified in the middle of the 70th week
  • 66 CE - First Jewish-Roman War begins
  • 70 CE - Titus destroys Jerusalem and the Temple

The 70 weeks has not been fulfilled.

Dan 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

Israel as a nation has 70 weeks, 490 years, to end sins, bring in everlasting righteousness, and anoint the most holy who is Jesus.

But we see Israel as a nation has not done that.

So the 70 weeks has not been fulfilled.

69 weeks have passed with 1 week to go.

Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

So this cannot be applied to Jesus because the last week has not happened.

It is the prince to come, the antichrist, that confirms a covenant for one week.

Which the Roman Empire does not lose their physical dominion until Jesus puts the world down and the antichrist will be of the Roman Empire.

Which in the future Caucasian nations and nations taken over by Caucasians will be in league together.

Bound by the new age christianity( 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 2 Timothy 4:2-4).

That will influence the world.

The New Age Christ will be of the new age.

The last week is when God allows all people that do not love the truth to follow the antichrist and brings Israel to the truth that Jesus is their Messiah.

Act 1:6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
Act 1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

God is going to restore the kingdom to Israel.

Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
Mat 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
Mat 23:39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

The Hebrews will not see Jesus until Israel as a nation acknowledges Him as Lord and Savior.

That means Israel has to come to the truth before salvation can proceed.

Eze 39:21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
Eze 39:22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.
Eze 39:23 And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
Eze 39:24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.

Eze 39:25 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
Eze 39:26 After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
Eze 39:27 When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
Eze 39:28 Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
Eze 39:29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

God is going to bring the whole house of Israel all 12 tribes back to Israel and leave none of them in the nations anymore.

And they will know the Lord their God from that time forward and they will always be in the truth.

Rom 11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
Rom 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
Rom 11:27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

Israel is blinded in part until salvation is no longer available to the Gentiles.

And so all Israel shall be saved when God takes away their sins for they acknowledge the truth.

The antichrist will negotiate peace in the Middle East resulting in a 7 years peace treaty impacting the world as they come together as one to work for peace on earth.

For the first 3.5 years he will push the agenda of the new age which he will think to change times and laws.

And prepare the world for when he claims to be God.

It will pave the way for all Hebrews to go to Israel for the Gentile nations will see to it.

Which the antichrist wants them all back on their land but God means it for good towards them.

The Hebrews will rebuild their 3rd temple with no hassle from the Palestinians and go back to animal sacrifices for the orthodox Hebrews but some will not accept it.

At the end of the 3.5 years the antichrist will step in to their temple and claim to be God and stop their animal sacrifices.

When the world takes the mark of the beast salvation is no longer available to them and the fulness of the Gentiles have come in.

Rev 11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
Rev 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

Rev 11:5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
Rev 11:6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

Rev 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
Rev 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
Rev 11:9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
Rev 11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
Rev 11:11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
Rev 11:12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.
Rev 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

The beast will rule for 3.5 years which God will send 2 witnesses to turn Israel to the truth.

And at the end of that time Israel as a nation will be in the truth and the 70th week will be fulfilled.

Continued from above post

Rev 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Israel is protected from physical attack during the first 3.5 years.

Rev 12:13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
Rev 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Israel is protected from physical attack for the last 3.5 years.

Israel is protected for the 7 years because God is bringing them to the truth and restoring the kingdom to them.

Zec 12:1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
Zec 12:2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
Zec 12:3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.

Zec 14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
Zec 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
Zec 14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
Zec 14:5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah:

and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

Zec 14:12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

2Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.

After the 7 years the antichrist and the world will attack Israel which Jesus will come back and defeat the world and save Israel.

Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

Zec 14:16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

Jesus will rule out of Jerusalem over the heathen.

"But we see Israel as a nation has not done that." - We have.

Galatians 3:6-8 — Just as Abraham BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. Therefore, recognize that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU.”

Seventy weeks

Dan 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

1. To finish the transgression.

Isaiah 53:8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

2. To make an end of sins.

Isaiah 44:22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Act 5:31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. (Hebrews 10:18)

3. To make reconciliation for iniquity.

Heb 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

4. To bring in everlasting righteousness.

Rom 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

Rom 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Psa 119:142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.

5. To seal up the vision and prophecy.

Rev 5:1 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

Rev 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

6. To anoint the most Holy.

Act 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

The seventy weeks were completed.

It is interesting to note that the translators of the King James Bible capitalized Prince in ----------

Dan 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the Prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

It was the Jewish people who destroyed the city and the sanctuary. (Read Joesephus) Titus tried to save it.

In Daniel 9:27 the city was destroyed because of abominations. Now ask yourself this. Who brings destruction because of abominations, God, or the antichrist?

Daniel 9:24-27 speaks of events that are to take place within 70 weeks. I will now place the events of this passage in a historical context, accepting the common interpretation of exegetes that one day here corresponds to one year.

Exegesis of Daniel 9:24-27

Since one day here corresponds to one year, 70 weeks are 490 years. The decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem refers to that of Artaxerxes I in 458 BCE (Ezr 7). From 458 BCE, 483 years (7 weeks and 62 weeks) into the future, we end up in the year 26 CE. In 26 CE, Jesus Christ, who is the Messiah, was baptized and thus began his ministry.

I disagree where you are heading here but a better question is:

Why were the scriptures written in weeks?????

Such as 7 weeks and 62 weeks

It should have been written 7-7's and 62-7's not weeks

Weeks were probably written to pertain to a different answer than most undertand as weeks of years. The Bibical language could have been easily written with all numbers.

And at the end of that time Israel as a nation will be in the truth and the 70th week will be fulfilled.

the HE IN DANIEL 9 is JESUS

The 70 weeks has not been fulfilled.
In Matthew 24:15, Jesus himself states that the second half of the 70th week (Daniel 9:27) was fulfilled through the First Jewish-Roman War between 66 and 70 CE (Matthew 24:1-2). And as I already explained in my OP, the first half of the 70th week was fulfilled through Jesus' ministry between 26-30 CE.

And Flavius Josephus reports that Jesus actually returned with an army on clouds during the First Jewish-Roman War. Josephus writes in The Wars of the Jews, 6.296–6.299: "Besides these, a few days after that feast, on the one and twentieth day of the month Artemisius, [Jyar], a certain prodigious and incredible phenomenon appeared: I suppose the account of it would seem to be a fable, were it not related by those that saw it, and were not the events that followed it of so considerable a nature as to deserve such signals; for, before sunsetting, chariots and troops of soldiers in their armor were seen running about among the clouds, and surrounding of cities."

And as I already explained in my OP, the first half of the 70th week was fulfilled through Jesus' ministry between 26-30 CE.

The 2nd half was fulfilled by the apostles' ministry, which continued establishment of the new covenant with Israel in fulfillment of God's promise to them, at which point, that promise having been fulfilled, God opened the door to the gentiles through Peter, who baptized the Roman Cornelius into the kingdom of God (Acts 10).

Thanks for your study.

Don't you think it should start with Cyrus's decree around 539 BC? Isaiah 44:28

Could the 7 and 62 weeks be separate? E.g. 62 weeks starts at time of Nehemiah in 444 BC?

End of 62 weeks marks coming of Jesus and His death. And the destruction of the temple. But you are saying these things are related to the 70th week. Which doesn't seem to capture the intent of the passage.

You are splitting the 70th week into two halves and putting the break in the middle. It sounds like it should be one contiguous seven years. What, in your opinion, is the abomination of desolation?

Daniel 8:11-12 shows a similar scenario where sacrifices are stopped, but it is described as something negative. So I don't think Dan. 9:27 is describing something positive like Jesus's once for all sacrifice, which is mentioned in Dan. 9:26.

Daniel 8:11-12 obviously refers to Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Thus, Daniel 9:26 and Daniel 8:1-12 are different from each other.

Explain what you actually mean. Start in 539 or 444 BC? And when do you end? Provide a proper summary calculation.
End of 62 weeks marks coming of Jesus and His death.
What are you even talking about? If I calculate 62 weeks from 444 BC, I end up with 9 CE. But Jesus was crucified in 30 CE. Like I said before, give a proper summary calculation like I did in the original post.
It sounds like it should be one contiguous seven years.
Says who? Says you. But I don't agree with what you say.
What, in your opinion, is the abomination of desolation?
It was a Roman idol.

Daniel 8 is different, but I think Antioch is is a type of the Antichrist and stopping sacrifices is a type of Dan. 9:27

7 weeks: 539-490 BC
62 weeks: 444-10 BC

Jesus born in week immediately following around 6 BC. Died 30AD, City and sanctuary destroyed 70AD

Sure. We can have different opinions about whether one week is contiguous.

No Roman idol in temple in 66AD, as far as I know.

If you calculate 62 weeks from 444 BCE, you do indeed end up in 10 BCE. But that's not the year of Jesus' birth. Jesus was born sometime between 6 and 4 BCE. You acknowledge this inaccuracy and claim Jesus was born the following week. You're saying that Jesus was born in the 70th week, since the week after the 7th and 62nd weeks is the 70th week. So you do believe that the 70th week has already occurred. But if you now claim it's not the 70th week, how can you say that Jesus was born the following week? Where do you get that extra week from? It would be an inconsistency in your interpretation, since you're twisting things to suit your own purposes.

Not a Chance

he will set up an abomination that causes desolation.-------------- Certainly not Yeshua
“And HE (CHRIST) will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week HE (CHRIST) will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering..." WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TEMPLE WHILE JESUS WAS ON THE CROSS?

I don't think Matthew 24:15 is about AD66. As I pointed out, there was no Roman idol set up in the temple in AD66. Jesus said He would come immediately after that tribulation. Many people think AD66 is the subject of Matthew 24:15, but Jesus did not specifically say that.

Daniel 12:11 seems to say the stopping of sacrifices and the abomination of desolation start 1290 days. Sounds like these two events are closely related (and I think close in time).

The 70 weeks prophecy doesn't talk about years, or months, or days. So we do not need to expect the precision to be year, month, or day. The only time unit mentioned is a week (7 years).

Abomination of Desolation:
**The “abomination of desolation” (Greek: *to bdelygma tēs erēmōseōs*) in Matthew 24:15** is Jesus’ reference to Daniel’s prophecies (Dan 9:27; 11:31; 12:11), where a sacrilegious act or entity profanes the Temple (“holy place”) and triggers its desolation/judgment. This sign is tied directly to events in the First Jewish-Roman War of 66–70 AD, with the Temple’s destruction in 70 AD.

The interpretation draws on the parallel in Luke 21:20 (“Jerusalem surrounded by armies”), eyewitness accounts in Josephus’ *Jewish War*, and the need for the sign to prompt immediate flight to the mountains (Matt 24:16). They fall into several distinct (though sometimes overlapping) categories. Here are **all the main ways** scholars and historians have linked it specifically to the 66–70 AD war:

### 1. The Roman armies encircling or approaching Jerusalem (the “surrounding armies” view)
- **Core idea**: The pagan Roman legions themselves—with their idolatrous standards (eagles and emperor images)—constitute the abomination because they represent foreign idolatry invading the holy land/city. Their presence “stands” near or in the holy place (broadly Judea or Jerusalem as the “holy city” in Dan 9:24 and Matt 4:5).
- **Key events**:
- **Cestius Gallus’ campaign (66 AD)**: Roman forces under the Syrian legate surrounded Jerusalem during Passover. They pressed against the Temple walls (using *testudo* formations) but mysteriously withdrew, allowing Christians to flee (traditionally to Pella in the mountains, per early church historians). Josephus notes this as providential.
- **Titus’ siege (70 AD)**: The final encirclement by Roman legions under Titus.
- **Why it fits**: Luke 21:20 makes this explicit as the flight signal. It parallels Antiochus Epiphanes’ earlier pagan intrusion.

### 2. Zealot occupation and internal sacrilege in the Temple (the “Jewish factions pollute the sanctuary” view)
- **Core idea**: The abomination is committed *by Jews themselves* through civil war and profanation of the holy place—fulfilling Daniel’s “on the wing of abominations” (Dan 9:27) as internal covenant-breaking that invites desolation. Josephus repeatedly calls this worse than any pagan act.
- **Key events (66–68/69 AD)**:
- Zealots seized the Temple, turned it into a fortress, murdered moderate priests and civilians inside the sacred courts, and spilled blood profusely (outer court “overflowed with blood”; bodies left unburied).
- They installed a mock high priest, Phannias ben Samuel (not from Aaron’s line), chosen by lot in winter 67–68 AD—an “unqualified” intruder in the Holy of Holies. Retired high priest Ananus wept that the Temple was now “full of abominations.”
- **Why it fits**: This occurred *inside* the holy place, giving time to flee (unlike the final destruction). Some tie it to the cessation of proper sacrifices.

### 3. Idumean (Edomite) invasion and massacre in the Temple courts
- **Core idea**: An extension of #2—the Zealots invited ~20,000 Idumeans (traditional enemies) into Jerusalem; they slaughtered thousands in the Temple precincts, further polluting it with blood and impiety.
- **Key event (late 67/early 68 AD)**: Idumeans, let in by Zealots, joined the slaughter. Josephus links this directly to ancient prophecies: when “civil war” and “the temple be profaned by the hands of native Jews,” the city would fall and the Temple burn.
- **Why it fits**: Explicit Temple profanation by “blood-shedding villains” (Ananus’ words), seen by some as the abomination that “stands” where it ought not.

### 4. Roman entry, standards, and pagan sacrifices in the Temple (the “Roman idolatry in the sanctuary” view)
- **Core idea**: The classic parallel to Antiochus Epiphanes—pagan idols and worship literally “standing” in the holy place.
- **Key event (70 AD)**: After breaching Jerusalem, Titus’ soldiers planted Roman military standards (bearing emperor images/eagles) on the Temple towers/eastern gate and offered sacrifices to them as gods (Josephus, *Wars* 6.6.1).
- **Why it fits**: Direct idolatrous desecration in the ruined sanctuary. Some see this as the culminating act (the abomination *causing* final desolation).

### 5. Hybrid or sequential views (internal Jewish abomination + Roman desolation)
- **Core idea**: The abomination begins with Jewish rebellion/factional sacrilege (Zealots/Idumeans/Phannias as the “people of the prince” in Dan 9:26 who destroy the city and sanctuary), which then brings Roman desolation as divine judgment. Or the whole war (66–70 AD) is the process, with multiple “standing” stages.
- **Supporting details**: Cessation of daily sacrifices (due to Zealot control or siege); the Temple’s conversion into a “den of robbers”; broader Jewish rejection of Jesus as the ultimate covenant breach.
- **Why it fits**: Explains the “abomination *that causes* desolation” phrasing—Jewish sin triggers Roman destruction. Josephus himself frames the war this way.

### Additional notes on these interpretations
- **Timing and the “flee” command**: Views tied to 66–68 AD (Cestius, Zealots, Idumeans) best fit the urgent escape window; 70 AD events (Titus’ final breach) are sometimes critiqued as “too late.” Early Christians reportedly fled during the 66 AD lull.
- **“Holy place” flexibility**: Literally the Temple (most common), but can mean the holy city/land or even the outer courts where Romans/Idumeans stood.

In short, every major phase of the war—Roman approach, Jewish internal chaos, and final Roman conquest—has been proposed as (or contributed to) the abomination, all grounded in Josephus’ eyewitness details and the need for a visible sign that matched Daniel while prompting flight.
